It looks like we are getting another Johnny Depp performance that is hidden below layers of makeup, however this time he is not playing a character from a world of fantasy. Depp is playing someone who is very real, James "Whitey" Bulger. Audiences have been pleading with Depp to reel in his over-the-top performances and go back to his dramatic side. It seems that we might be getting the best of both worlds in the upcoming movie, Black Mass.
The true story of Bulger already seems like a work of fiction. A career criminal who was a test subject in government authorized experimentation on mind control, by using LSD on prisoners. He served time in various prisons including Alcatraz, before returning to Boston and climbing up the mob ladder. In the 70's, he leveraged being an informant for the FBI, into becoming the top kingpin in the area. The movie is based on the book titled “Black Mass: The True Story of an Unholy Alliance between the FBI and the Irish Mob”, by Dick Lehr and Gerard O’Neill and this is one to look out for this fall.
It looks as if Depp has undergone another one of his trademark transformations. If he can disappear into this dark role, it will remind many of his talent. Many think that Depp's last truly great performances were in Donnie Brasco and Blow. Fingers are crossed that another role in the underworld will bring the best out of Depp.
The supporting cast looks strong and is marked with a few notable faces. Joel Edgerton (Warrior) plays the FBI agent who makes the bad judgement in character by recruiting Bulger. Benedict Cumberbatch from Sherlock and Marvel's upcoming Doctor Strange, plays Bulger's brother Billy, who happened to be a State Senator and later the president of the University of Massachusetts. Told ya this is a wild story. In addition, we get to see Cumberbatch unleash his Boston accent on the world. If you didn't get enough of him in Ant-Man, Corey Stoll also has a supporting role. The cast also features Jesse Plemons (Breaking Bad), Sienna Miller (American Sniper), Peter Sarsgaard (Knight and Day), and Kevin Bacon ([X-Men: Days Of Future Past](tag:203942)).
In 1970s South Boston, FBI Agent John Connolly (Joel Edgerton) persuades Irish mobster James “Whitey” Bulger (Johnny Depp) to collaborate with the FBI and eliminate a common enemy: the Italian mob. The drama tells the story of this unholy alliance, which spiraled out of control, allowing Whitey to evade law enforcement, consolidate power, and become one of the most ruthless and powerful gangsters in Boston history.
Black Mass opens on September 18th, 2015.
