There are very few words which are more subjective than the term "sexy". Flirts, suggestive glances and whispers or full on-screen nudity can all be possible explanations of this term.
However, this list has it all and does not tie you up to only one type of sexy. Many titles were considered for this list, ranging from Boogie Nights (1997), American Pie (1999) and Magic Mike (2012) to From Dusk Till Dawn (1996), Black Swan (2010) and Don Jon (2013), but who made the final cut? Without further ado, here are the 10 sexiest movies of all time (in my opinion):
10. Body Heat (1981)
Body Heat (1981) is a neo-noir erotic thriller directed by Lawrence Kasdan (the film marked the directorial debut of Kasdan, who was also one of the screenwriters of The Empire Strikes Back (1980) and Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981)). It stars William Hurt, Kathleen Turner and Richard Crenna, and features Ted Danson, J.A. Preston, and Mickey Rourke.
Essentially, the plot of the movie is set in the midst of a searing Florida heat wave, where a woman (Kathleen Turner) convinces her lover, a small-town lawyer (Willian Hurt), to murder her rich husband (Richard Crenna). As you can imagine, things go wrong (and get quite intense at times) thanks to Kathleen Turner's stellar movie debut, which solidified her status as a femme fatale.
9. Mulholland Drive (2001)
Originally a discarded TV pilot, Mulholland Drive (2001) is definitely one of the best neo-noir films of all time. However, the main reason why it lands a place on this list is because of the intimate moments between Naomi Watts and Laura Herring, which are extremely passionate and also beautifully-shot.
Nevertheless, it should also be mentioned that the film was a massive critical success, earning David Lynch an Academy Award nomination for Best Director, as well as the Best Director Award at the 2001 Cannes Film Festival.
8. Y Tu Mamá También (2001)
Nowadays, we know Alfonso Cuarón mainly for directing Gravity (2013), which earned him two Oscars (Best Director and Best Achievement in Film Editing) and Children of Men (2006), which got him nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Achievement in Film Editing at the 2007 Oscars.
However, at the turn of the decade he was mostly known for Y Tu Mamá También (English: And Your Mother Too). The road trip film is set in 1999 against the backdrop of the political and economic realities of present-day Mexico, specifically at the end of the uninterrupted 71-year line of Mexican presidents from the Institutional Revolutionary Party and the rise of the opposition led by Vicente Fox.
The movie tells a coming-of-age story about two teenage boys who take a road trip with a woman in her late twenties and has been involved in controversy for its explicit depiction of sex and drug use. Despite this fact, Y Tu Mamá También (2001), got a positive critical reception and an Oscar nod for Best Original Screenplay for Alfonso and Carlos Cuarón.
7. Vicky Cristina Barcelona (2008)
Javier Bardem is not only a great actor, but he is also a very lucky man. In this Woody Allen film, he got to shoot some intimate scenes with Penélope Cruz (as it is well-known they later got married), Scarlett Johansson and Rebecca Hall.
Anyway, Vicky Christina Barcelona (2008), which is both extremely sexy and romantic, was a massive success winning the award for Best Motion Picture - Comedy or Musical at the Golden Globes. In addition, Penélope Cruz won a Best Supporting Actress Academy Award for this film.
6. Cruel Intentions (1999)
Cruel Intentions (1999) is an adaptation of Les Liaisons dangereuses, written by Pierre Choderlos de Laclos in 1782, but set among wealthy teenagers attending high school in modern New York City.
Starring Sarah Michelle Gellar, Ryan Phillippe, Reese Witherspoon and Selma Blair, the film quickly became a fan-favorite among teenagers for its masterful depiction of teenage sexual exploration and sexual manipulation. Even Roger Ebert himself praised the movie, saying that it was "smart and merciless in the tradition of the original story".
5. Basic Instinct (1992)
This has to be the godfather of all sexy movies. Undeniably, Basic Instinct (1992) is best known for Sharon Stone's iconic leg cross, but the film offers more than that.
Of course the sexiness that Stone brought to the film is the main reason for its success. However, the overall neo-noir vibe and Michael Douglas' solid performance make Basic Instinct (1992) an even better film.
4. The Dreamers (2003)
It is hardly a surprise that The Dreamers (2003) is the main reason why Eva Green was cast as Vesper Lynd in Casino Royale (2006). In this film her acting skills (and her body) are fully-exposed.
The Dreamers (2003) is incredibly sexy, but also a rather bizzare film. It is set in 1968 in Paris and it follows the story of an American student (Michael Pitt). who finds himself entangled in a love triangle with the alluring Isabelle (Eva Green) and her brother (Louis Garrel). Overall, the film is not only exceptionally erotic, but also very artistic and poignant.
3. Out Of Sight (1998)
Out of Sight (1998) was directed by Steven Soderbergh and is based on the novel of the same name by Elmore Leonard. The movie is a crime comedy and it features George Clooney, Jennifer Lopez, Ving Rhames, Don Cheadle, Dennis Farina, Nancy Allen, Steve Zahn and Albert Brooks.
The reason why the film is so high on this list is because Out of Sight (1998) manages to be sexy without over-relying on nudity and being explicit. The charm of this movie is in the chemistry and tension between its two leads - George Clooney and Jennifer Lopez have.
2. 9½ Weeks (1986)
In the 1980s Mickey Rourke was the true definition of a sex symbol and 9½ Weeks (1986) is the perfect proof for that.
In this infamous erotic thriller, Rourke plays a mysterious wall street banker who begins a relationship with an irresistible art gallery worker (Kim Basinger). The film might have been a box-office disappointment and a failure with critics, but its erotic nature is what makes it unique.
1. Wild Things (1998)
Yes, Wild Things (1998) is a ridiculous, over-the-top film. However, its sex appeal is apparent and undeniable. The plot revolves around a guidance counsellor (Matt Dillon) who ends up being accused of rape by two incredibly sexy students (Denise Richards and Neve Campbell) and as you can imagine, from this point things only get weirder... and hotter.
The movie is most famous for the iconic pool scene between Denise Richards and Neve Campbel, as well as the scene in which Richards climbs out of a pool in a very revealing outfit. In conclusion, I think that Wild Things (1998) definitely deserves the first place on this list for the sheer amount of sex appeal that this film has.
