A while ago, Joker's new costume was shown off the the world, sparking debate on whether or not this look really fit the character we know and love. It is different from anything we have seen before, but the recently shown Suicide Squad trailer looks promising. Now that most of the debate has died down, here is my opinion on his new outfit.
The outfit as a whole seems to be really intent on telling a story. Every tattoo he has could be used as a nod to a significant event in the comics, or even something minor for the true fans. Upon being asked what a tattoo means, he can state it's about crippling a police commissioner's daughter, or killing that same commissioner's ex wife. Even his metal teeth could be used to show how far he has pushed batman in the past, assuming that they are there because batman knocked his block off instead of just being there to modernize him.
The great thing about this is that Joker can be fleshed out with nods to events, instead of having to see each event happen. With minimal screen time, the Joker can become the DCCU's version of Loki. Of course, this also has a bad side.
The good thing about the new costume is also possibly the worst. Despite being set up in a way that could flesh out the new character without being in every movie from Justice League to Aquaman, these elements can also be used as flashback bait to give the Joker more screen time then he deserves. One of the Joker's famous lines is "If I am going to have a past, I prefer it to be multiple choice!" So staying true to the comic's, Joker can give multiple explanations for the same tattoo, scar, or any other element of his costume the writer's decide. Which may add too much unnecessary screen time that derail's the plot of the movie and screws over character's like Killer Croc or Captain Boomerang who may not get another live action appearance. Although most people would prefer to see Joker beating Jason Todd to death, I personally would like to see the lesser known characters finally get their time in the limelight.
Despite the new costume having multiple opportunities for story telling, wouldn't it be more awesome if we got classic Joker on screen? This new costume is more modern, but nothing on it is as timeless as his classic purple suit. No matter how good these new movies are, it could always get better if he ends up in his more traditional attire instead of his newer costume.
And do we even need a new Joker so soon? He is a good villain, perhaps one of the best ever put in a comic book. But we are currently in the golden age of comic book movies, and it might be time to at least temporarily put lesser known villains in the spotlight, and then introduce the big hitters in a fully built universe with alot more toys to play with. Characters like Victor Zsass can play the role of demented psychopath for now.
Of course, this is all just my opinion, so feel free to share your's in the comments below.
