Many of us may have wondered if Anna and Elsa will ever be official members of the Disney Princess franchise. It is the third quarter of 2015 now and the massively popular Frozen princesses are still not listed as Disney Princesses.
There are many speculations as to why, but I believe Disney might be making a huge, significant change to the Disney Princess franchise.
Look at this list. Can you see a pattern out of these?
- Snow White (Fairy tale)
- Cinderella (Fairy tale)
- Aurora (Fairy tale)
- Ariel (Fairy tale)
- Belle (Fairy tale)
- Jasmine (Fairy tale)
- Pocahontas (Historical Figure)
- Mulan (Legendary Figure)
- Tiana (Fairy tale)
- Rapunzel (Fairy tale)
- Merida (Original/Pixar)
- Moana (Original/Upcoming)
As we can observe from Disney releases, they have been working hard in creating original princesses but the big question is: Are they attempting to stop creating Disney Princesses out of fairy tales? If this is true, it might be one of the reasons why Anna and Elsa are not in the list, since Frozen is based on a fairy tale, just like its earlier predecessors!
Here's the quick analysis. To date, there are eleven official members in the Disney Princess franchise namely Snow White, Cinderella, Aurora, Ariel, Belle, Jasmine, Pocahontas, Mulan, Tiana, Rapunzel, and Merida.
The first six, ninth and tenth Disney Princesses are all based on German, French, Danish and Arabian fairy tales whereas the seventh and eighth Disney Princess are loosely based on actual historical and legendary figures.
The last in the current official list is a fictional character created by Pixar. Since the Frozen princesses are never crowned and the upcoming Disney Princess Moana is most likely also be a fictional Polynesian character... I guess we may conclude that Disney has started to draw less inspirations directly from our much loved fairy tales!
No More Disney Princesses from Fairy Tales?
Honestly, if Disney truly have the intentions of making the sisters members of the Disney Princess franchise, all they probably need is a green light from the final decision-makers. The rest of the procedure is surely possible afterwards.
Some of us may feel upset if this happens but if we see this from another point of view, isn't it great that Disney is trying to produce their own original line up of Disney Princess? This change may take years and may have started already but I believe it is a great effort... Only time will tell if this is true!
