On July 31 the world stood to attention to honor the literary mastermind behind the Harry Potter series. Naturally, had we been within the cobbled maze of Diagon Alley, we would have enthusiastically clinked our glasses of butterbeer in a toast to the wonderful J.K. Rowling, who celebrated her 50th birthday on Friday. Coincidentally, a special day shared with her own creation, The Boy Who Lived himself.
Instead however, many of us Muggle folk took to the Twittersphere (equally as magical...?) to engulf the legendary author with a tirade of birthday loving.
Yet amongst the wave of heartfelt messages, a few particularly stood out. And this is all thanks to the kind people over at Time magazine, who did a fantastic job of tracking down actors involved in the magical franchise, putting together a collection of loving sentiments for the British writer to read over.
Let's take a look at some of the wonderful things that they had to say:
1. Alan Rickman
True to his nature, the legend behind Severus Snape sent in this slightly cryptic message:
The Happiest of Birthdays, Jo.
A breeze for the supreme Time-traveller.
Love from Alan Rickman.
2. Imelda Staunton
Imelda contributed a sentiment worthy of Dolores Umbridge:
Dear Miss Rowling,
On the occasion of your birthday I trust you will be clothed in delicious pink garments surrounded by plates of purring kittens.
These wishes come,
By order of Dolores Umbridge
3. Robbie Coltraine
Hagrid also had some kind words to share, as well as a great suggestion:
Happy Birthday! Jo.
You don't look a day over 40; everyone knows what a wonderful writer you are, and how much you did to get children to read books, and your charity work, but they perhaps don't know that in private you are very, very funny. Perhaps you could celebrate your half century by writing a hilarious film. Perhaps, starring, I don't know, a large Scottish man. Have a great day, you so deserve it, all my love,
Robbie C. XX
4. David Thewlis
Remus Lupin joked:
Felicem diem natalem, Jo and welcome to the happiest decade. Now isn't it about time you did something with your life? xxx
5. Matthew Lewis
It seems that these days Matthew always finds the right thing to say (and the right kind of photoshoot to pose for...) and his birthday wishes to J.K. are no exception:
I could talk about the millions of lives Jo has enriched whether through the stories and characters she's created or through the millions of pounds she's given to charity. She's a remarkable woman. However, I would like to thank Jo for changing MY life. Without her imagination and her talent I would never have become the man I am today. That's not even to mention her generosity and loyalty when it has come to supporting everything that I have done in the years since Harry Potter. She's just a wonderful human being and I consider myself so privileged and honoured to call her a friend.
Happy birthday, Jo.
Ooof, right in the feels!
6. Jason Isaacs
Similarly, the man behind our on-screen version of Lucius Malfoy agrees that J.K. is a remarkable woman:
To the woman whose imagination has made half the world feel less alone, afraid and in the dark; may the light you continue to shine always bounce back with interest. And at flattering angle, naturally.
7. Clemence Poesy
Fleur de la Coeur graced the author with her elegant French charm:
Bel anniversaire! Bel Anniversaire! Or "appyeuh bizadayeuh" as Fleur would say - and thank you for the wonders you've created ....
8. Oliver and James Phelps
No celebration would be complete without a bit of mischief from the Weasley twins. One half of the duo, Oliver, said this:
Happy Birthday Jo!!! Thanks to your brilliantly creative mind and humor, my life has been far from beyond anything I'd ever thought possible. Have an amazing day & watch out for any "Puking Pastilles." Much love,
While James kept it short and sweet, but no less heartfelt:
Happy Birthday Jo, I hope you have a great day. Mischief managed.
9. Rupert Grint
And their on-screen brother naturally also chimed in, sending a short but a typically-Ron kind of message:
Happy Birthday Jo,
Wishing you a very Happy Birthday on your special day! Lots of love,
10. Natalia Tena
Tonks once more reiterated the life-changing effect of Harry Potter, saying, amongst other things:
50 years ago, a someone was born that has done what most of us dream of. She has made this little planet of ours a better, happier place and will leave a legacy that means that, that joy will continue to exponentially grow, generation by generation. [...] Let's face it, we all want to live in her world, identify individually with the characters and the magic wielded there which seems to be like a fantastic extension of our tangible world.
Natalia ends her long tribute with:
Thank you and I'll be having a pint of butter beer (JK, please tell us the recipe!) here's to another 50 years (can't believe you're 50 by the way, you look HOT!)
11. Evanna Lynch
The actress behind Luna Lovegood expressed some wonderful sentiments, which perhaps made a little more sense considering what her on-screen character would have said. She shared how inspired she felt to have met J.K.:
It was both marvelous and incredible to realize you were human, to see your warmth, curiosity, the generous gaze and genuine interest you afforded each person you encountered. You left me with the distinct impression that small, sensitive ladies can change the world.

Needless to say, J.K. was over the moon, posting the following Tweet of heartfelt thanks for all the good wishes:
What about Harry and Hermione?
Yet, while tributes were in full swing, many couldn't help but notice that Daniel Radcliffe and Emma Watson's birthday greetings were missing from Time's list of many happy returns. Perhaps they got lost in transit via owl post?
Wherever the two actors were however, I'm sure both personally contacted Jo on her big day. Because, after all, Harry and Hermione wouldn't miss such an occasion for the world, would they?
