Now, if there's one truly great divide within geek culture - other than that separating the die-hard partisans of Marvel and DC - it's the seemingly unbridgeable gap between fans of Star Wars and Star Trek. So much so, in fact, that even for those who love both - this writer included - one of the two invariably holds a slightly more central place in their hearts.
What's more, with Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens set to hit our screens this coming December, and Star Trek Beyond due next year, that rivalry may well be set to heat up once again - and the recent comments of a geek legend may just inflame the whole thing past boiling point. Y'see:
Simon Pegg Just Revealed How Much He Hates the Star Wars Prequels
The question of whether or not they suck, of course, being not only a key sub-debate within geek-culture, but also a key criticism thrown at the Star Wars franchise by those who prefer Star Trek (or pretty much anything else).
Now, of course, both Pegg's devoted love of the original Star Wars trilogy...
...and deeply-rooted disdain for the prequels...
...have been well-documented in the past - yet since taking the writing reins of the Star Trek movies, Pegg has largely attempted to keep his head down a little more, not least because his good friend J.J. Abrams is now at the helm of the Star Wars franchise.
Until, that is, he sat down recently with MTV News, and was asked to rank the six Star Wars movies thus far.
Which he of course did, in magnificently scathing fashion:
That order, in case you missed it?
6. Episode II: Attack of the Clones
"We all thought it was better than Phantom Menace but it wasn't. It was just as bad - in fact it was worse."
5. Episode I: The Phantom Menace
"The Phantom Menace was incredibly disappointing...we all know that because we went to see it and we all cried and it destroyed our life."
4. Episode III: Revenge of the Sith
"At least there was some connection to the first three films, which saved it for me, even though it was another large mess."
3. Episode VI: Return of the Jedi
"Love it very much, but I think it's probably the lesser of the three."
2. Episode IV: A New Hope
Which, it turns out, only loses out on top spot due to the existence of a certain:
1. Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back
"I would probably say - which is a controversial thing, but - in terms of artistry and just sheer balls, Empire Strikes back would be my favorite."
And, just in case we were in any doubt as to how he feels, Pegg also had this to add:
"I hate the prequels."
And, y'know what? You can't get much more cut-and-dried an opinion than that...
What do you reckon, though?
How do you feel about the Star Wars prequels?
