As we already know, now that Captain America: Civil War is to start up Phase 3, Marvel Phase 2 is officially over. But I want to take a look back and a look ahead as to what happened and what is to come in all the phases of the MCU. The MCU to me is the only known shared universe series of movies that share continuity. It has provided us as fans with so many great stories about either a team of heroes or an individual hero. So let's take a look back at Marvel Phases 1 and 2

Phase 1 included the following:

  • Iron Man (2008)
  • The Incredible Hulk (2008)
  • Iron Man 2 (2010)
  • Thor (2011)
  • Captain America: The First Avenger (2011)
  • The Avengers (2012)

These films were referred to as the subtitle 'Avengers Assembled'. The five individual films were all brought together in The Avengers. I see Phase 1 beginning with the events of Captain America chronologically and culminating in the New York showdown in The Avengers. Technically this is a chronological term for some people who follow this series (like myself). But as we move on to Phase 2, I somewhat see this as both a continuation of the saga and an aftermath to everything that has happened in Phase 1 (particularly in New York with the aliens).

Phase 2 included the following here:

  • Iron Man 3 (2013)
  • Thor: The Dark World (2013)
  • Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014)
  • Guardians of the Galaxy (2014)
  • Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015)
  • Ant-Man (2015)

Phase 2 sees all the characters from The Avengers returning to a normal life after saving New York from decimation. Captain America: The Winter Soldier saw the fall of SHIELD and the rise of HYDRA which is impacted in some events of Avengers: Age of Ultron (particularly the scene with Baron von Strucker, Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch). And Ant-Man is regarded as the aftermath which is also an origin story for Scott Lang's interpretation of Ant-Man himself.

As we learned from Ultron, Thor had a vision that revealed all four of the six Infinity Stones that were revealed in the MCU thus far. The Scepter is Mind, the Orb is Power, the Aether is Reality and the Tesseract is Space. This only leaves two more Stones before the ultimate clash happens in Avengers: Infinity War.

Phase 3 starts up in just a week with Captain America: Civil War. Here's a look at what films are to come:

  • Captain America: Civil War (2016)
  • Doctor Strange (2016)
  • Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 (2017)
  • Spider-Man Homecoming (2017)
  • Thor: Ragnarok (2017)
  • Black Panther (2018)
  • Avengers Infinity War Part 1 (2018)
  • Ant-Man and the Wasp (2018)
  • Captain Marvel (2019)
  • Avengers: Infinity War Part 2 (2019)

Looking at this, Phase 3 is set to be Marvel's biggest slate of films ever to date.

Captain America: Civil War as we already know will bring Iron Man into conflict with Captain America over the decision to sign for superhero regulation and support of the government.

We will also be introduced to Spider-Man and Black Panther who are to respectively be played by Tom Holland and Chadwick Boseman. Also, the movie will correspond with events depicted in Avengers Age of Ultron, Captain America: The Winter Soldier and the original Avengers.

Other characters set to appear in Civil War are Crossbones, Baron Zemo, Everett Ross and Thaddeus Ross among others along with returning characters Ant-Man, Scarlet Witch, Falcon, Bucky Barnes, Black Widow, War Machine, Hawkeye and Vision.

Doctor Strange is said to be Marvel's first film to take a look at the supernatural, where in this case is magical realms. The film will star Benedict Cumberbatch as the title character along with Chiwetel Ejiofor as Baron Mordo, Tilda Swinton as the Ancient One, and Mads Mikkelsen and Rachel McAdams in unknown roles. Though we already know that Mikkelsen is set to be an antagonist in the movie while McAdams is set to be a potential love interest.

This also puts into question about seeing the next Infinity Stone which could entail either the Time or Soul stones seeing that those two are the only remaining Infinity Stones before Infinity War.

Looking at this, Phase 3 is the supposed aftermath of the events of Age of Ultron (primarily Civil War). But Phase 3 is set to be a buildup to Infinity War.

Which Phase 3 movie are you looking forward to? Leave your thoughts below.
