Whether you are a fan of fantasy movies or not, you know that we have had our fair share of great fantasy movies and terrible fantasy movies.
But recently there has been a disturbingly small amount of fantasy movies coming out, and it could get to the point where the genre can swiftly fall to the floor. And we are here to find out why...
The reason this genre has become so successful is because of the Lord of the Rings trilogy. The Return of the King won 11 Oscars and earned over $1 Billion worldwide. The trilogy showed the world that even in a world of wizards and elves and magic and dark creatures, great movies can still be crafted from it. Then there was the Hobbit trilogy, which despite not being as well received, still gained mostly positive feedback, and managed to earn over $2.5 Billion worldwide.
Then there were the Harry Potter movies, which have become widely recognized and loved around the world, and have earned over $7 Billion Worldwide, which one again, showed the world that the fantasy genre can produce great movies.
Also Game of Thrones has become one of the best shows around at the moment, and has won multiple awards in the process.
Just as there are good fantasy movies, their are also terrible ones. A good example is the Twilight saga, which are some of the worst movies I have ever seen; awful acting, awful story, awful writing, awful directing, just all round abysmal, and it puts such a huge downer on the entire genre, and has pegged it back a few steps.
The most recent fantasy movie to come out was the Seventh Son, which was disappointing all round. The movie was too predictable and was too generic, and is a perfect symbol for the major problems of this genre.
Their are other films which match this film, such as Dracula Untold and Eragon, and these kind of fantasy movies need to have some serious changes in the near future.
So what's the problem, and what do they need to do?
The main problem with this genre is that it has become too cliched for it's own good, and fans know exactly what will happen before even entering the movie theater. If more fantasy films come out that are too similar to each other, then more people will refuse to see the movie, as they will already know what will happen.
As a genre, the creators need to break away from this repetitive hole they are in. When they create these fantasy films, they need to introduce more complex characters, a more complex story, and add a realistic tone to both of these aspects. Easier said than done, but if they apply this to the fantasy movies, then they are sure to have a large variety of fantasy movies, injecting some new life into the genre.
So what fantasy movies are coming out?
A big fantasy movie that is set to come out is the new Warcraft film, which has two big genres on its back (Video Game and Fantasy). There has been a positive buzz around this film, and this could be the decisive film that dictates the fate of the fantasy movie genre in the short term.
Another big fantasy movie that is set to come out is the Harry Potter spin-off movie called "Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them," which is definitely going to earn lots of box office income with the brand name alone, but what matters is the quality of the movie, and this movie has a good chance of delivering some fantasy master-class!
For me, these are the two movies that will decide the fate of the fantasy movies, and hopefully, they will deliver the goods!
Will the genre decline, or even die?
The genre could easily decline, but it will never die! If the repetitiveness continues, then the genre is sure to slow down.
But there is so much love for this genre all around the world that it is virtually impossible for the fantasy genre to die, but if it declines, then it can become quite difficult to regain the power they has 5-10 years ago.
Do you think the fantasy genre will improve?
