Superhero films are taking over the world lately, and it seems as though they're not slowing down anytime soon, BUT, with so much of the same thing, (I'm looking at YOU Marvel) superhero movies as a genre may just die soon due to over saturation. I believe 'Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice' can change this problem, and I'll tell you why.
I may spoil things from films that have already been released from both Marvel AND DC, so beware! xD
Opposite of Marvel (Duh)
Alright, let's get the most obvious thing out of the way first... Marvel and DC have POLAR OPPOSITE tones in their respective films. Everyone and their grandma has seen 'The Avengers' and 'The Dark Knight', AND, everyone and their grandma can clearly tell that DC has a very dark and gritty style. This is EXACTLY what the superhero "Cinematic Universe" style of film-making needs. Now, there's nothing wrong with Marvel's fun, light-hearted and family friendly MCU, in fact, I LOVE those movies to DEATH! No, no... what I'M talking about, is a dark, gritty, and more realistic take on a huge, ever expanding superhero universe. We as an audience have never had the pleasure of seeing a superhero team-up movie that didn't crack jokes after every other punch. Now, before the Marvel fanboys rip me apart, I'll restate that there's NOTHING wrong with that, and there are plenty of room for jokes in Batman v Superman, but if you're like me and most of the world that saw 'The Avengers: Age of Ultron', you were probably a little bit disappointed that it was practically a clone of the first Avengers with what seemed like even MORE silliness tacked on than its predecessor. I still nerd-gasmed out every 5 seconds, but not the way I did the first time around. These big team-up movies need higher stakes, that we as an audience actually care about. We all knew that Earth's Mightiest Heroes would live to fight another day, just like we knew Tony Stark would return to crack some more jokes directly in the face of danger, and I think it's time for a change of pace.
Alright, now we can dig into a little more detail. I'm just gonna say this straight up, DC has better, more mature and realistic themes. For example, if an alien like Superman came to Earth, how would the population REALLY react? Well, luckily you don't have to look too far, because Batman v Superman answers this question in spades. Some will worship Superman like a GOD... and others will treat him like the Devil...
With the "Battle of Metropolis" being very reminiscent of the real world tragedy 9/11, it shows that not everything is rainbows and sunshine after an epic superhero showdown that subsequently destroys half the city (The Avengers). People are even shown with picket signs of hatred towards poor Supes in the BvS trailer. There are consequences for Superman's actions, and by the looks of the trailer, (And the damn movie title itself) the law isn't the only thing out to make Superman answer for his crimes.
Now, there are PLENTY of themes in the DC Extended Universe as a whole, but since this is mainly about BvS, we'll move on to the next topic.
Wonder Woman (FINALLY!)
Wonder Woman... 'nuff said. HA! JK! Women (and men!) from around the globe have been clamoring for this iconic female powerhouse to hit the silver screen, and it looks like she finally will in Batman v Superman! Not only that, but she'll be playing a bigger role in the long run according to Zack Snyder himself.
"She plays a super important part. In a lot of ways, she’s the gateway drug to the rest of the Justice League."
Besides putting the, "Dawn of Justice" in Batman v Superman, she's also responsible for empowering women everywhere, and I, as well as many others, am excited to see that come to life in modern cinema. Marvel is lacking severely in the female superhero category in their MCU, and Black Widow just won't cut it anymore. With Marvel's 'Captain Marvel' coming to theaters AFTER BvS AND the 'Wonder Woman' standalone film, it looks as though DC has this feisty cat in the bag! DC beats Marvel to the punch DOUBLE this time! xD
Alright, so this one is way more opinionated, but one thing that NOBODY can deny is that Zack Snyder can really make a movie look pretty... I mean REALLY! Who doesn't wanna see Batman fight Superman, and actually SEE Batman FIGHT Superman!?!?! In a world littered with the horrific "cinematography" (I use that word loosely) technique of shaky cam, it's a breath of fresh air to see a director who knows what he's doing visually. Whether you like the substance of his films or not, it's undeniable that he provides us viewers with some sweet, SWEET eye candy.
Eye catching cinema isn't the only thing this guy's got up his sleeve though. Zack is a HUGE geek, and is absolutely in love with comics. With Batman being one of his all-time favorite characters, he's super pumped to be able to bring this character into a gigantic shared universe in live-action for the first time in history. Not only that, but he's doing so with great care. Everything he does is meticulous, and if you've ever seen the behind-the-scenes of 'Man of Steel', then you know just how far this dude goes to make lore and backstory feel natural and REAL with minimal exposition. He even made and entire ALPHABET for Krypton, and the entire planet blew up before we knew what hit us! With Frank Miller's 'The Dark Knight Returns' being a BIG influence on BvS, my hopes for this movie reinvigorating the superhero film genre couldn't be higher.
This is a subject I'm only going to touch on quickly, because it doesn't have too much to do with BvS in specific, but I feel like it needs to be put out there. Let's face it, Marvel doesn't have the best track record for their villains. There are some exceptions of course, (Loki) but for the most part, either a Marvel villain is under-developed and lame, or they die almost immediately. Seriously, out of the 12 MCU films released thus far, how many villains survived BESIDES Loki (Who was supposed to die in 'Thor: The Dark World' but didn't due to fan demand-__-)? I wanna see these villains return stronger, and with a vengeance! Marvel is literally killing off GREAT potential story lines! What a shame! ),:
DC has the BEST villains of ALL-TIME, (The freakin' JOKER anyone!?) to the point that they're making an entire movie based on JUST the bad guys with 'Suicide Squad'! As long as they don't pull a Marvel, they have some real gold on their hands.
Yes, I'm serious. He could quite possibly be the BEST version of Bats yet! I realize that he wasn't the most popular choice back when he was first cast, hell, I was even on that bandwagon, BUT after seeing and hearing about what he has to offer in this incarnation of everyone's favorite Caped Crusader, I among many others, am now proudly on team "Batffleck".
Just like Snyder, Affleck is a die-hard fan of the character, and won't let this opportunity go down the garbage disposal. He's bulked up, and brooded up for the part of a more comic book accurate portrayal, and I'm diggin' it. In interviews, both Affleck and Snyder have talked about the new take on this legendary character being older and more seasoned, which let's us get straight to the juicy stuff! From the sound of it all, I have a strong feeling that Ben is going to knock this one out of the park... and into outer space! :D
Batman vs Superman
Last, but certainly not least, the moment you've all been waiting for! People across the world of every age have wanted to see Superman and Batman share the same screen in theaters since their creation 75 YEARS ago, and we FINALLY get what we wanted! Not only that, but they're going to FIGHT! YEEESS!!! If you don't wanna see that, you're LYING. These are the two most iconic and popular superheroes that have ever graced the comic book page, and seeing them both on the big screen feels almost like a dream! Marvel may be great, but the general non-comic book fan base had NEVER heard of Iron Man before the movie came out. People ranging from age 1-100 know who Superman and Batman are, and slapping both names into the title sells tickets with ease.
There are a TON of reasons I could list about how this film will change the superhero movie industry, but these points alone are MORE than enough to suffice. Not only will it change the genre, but it will probably break the box office as well! xD
What do YOU think!? Leave your comments down below, and tell me, how excited are YOU to see 'Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice' in theaters March 25th, 2016!?
