Terminator Genisys is...is a reboot? I think it might be a reboot. I'll talk more about that later in the review but anyways welcome to another review and today we'll be talking about the fifth and hopefully last "Terminator" film.
Brief Spoiler Free Summary
John Connor, leader of the human resistance sends Kyle Reese back in time to protect Sarah Connor (his mother) from a Terminator that Skynet sends back to kill her. Sounds like the original right? Well... It turns out someone else sent a Terminator back in time before all of this and its mission was to protect Sarah Connor. So now Kyle Reese and The Terminator need to protect Sarah Connor and destroy Skynet.
They're a lot of characters so we'll be only focusing on four of them.
The Terminator, once again played by Arnold Schwarzenegger and it's great to see him back in the role of The Terminator. It's better then having a CGI Arnold like they did in "Salvation". Anyways this Terminator is basically the Terminator from "Judgment Day", well personality wise as "Judgment Day" has been retconned...I think. God is this movie a sequel or a damn reboot?
Kyle Reese is back from the original film and "Salvation", played by Jai Courtney (also from "I, Frankenstein" and "Divergent") and he's...alright I guess. I think he did good for this version of Kyle but he's no Michael Biehn who is still the best Kyle Reese and will most likely always be the best Kyle Reese.
Next up is Sarah Connor played by Emilia Clarke (also from "Game of Thrones") and she is like Jai, a decent version of the character. However compared with Linda Hamilton who played Sarah Connor in the first two films, she's crap. Linda is honestly so much better in the role in every way.
Finally we have.....John...ugh. John Connor played by Jason Clarke and he does actually a damn good job of playing John...it just sucks that this movie ruins John Connor. At least in "Salvation" he was trying to defend...oh wait spoilers
At least in "Salvation" he was trying to save humanity and not wipe out humanity! You know how it's advertised that the T-1000 from "Judgment Day" was going to be the main villain? HAHA he's not, oh no he's not. Freaking John Connor is transformed and turned into a half human, half terminator cyborg of sorts...kinda like they did in "Salvation" to that guy nobody remembers. Yes you heard me right they take John Connor and make him evil. YOU CAN'T DO THAT MOVIE!
The Special Effects
The special effects are pretty good...most of the time. The main villain in the movie's design is decent I guess but his effects of moving and shapeshifting is crap. Hell it looked better in "Judgment Day", a movie made in 1991 looks better then a movie in 2015. Maybe I've been spoiled with really good CGI from "Guardians of the Galaxy" and "Jurassic World" and that's why I hate some of the effects but...I don't know, I just don't think some of the effects are very good.
Reboot or Sequel?
Usually I'd put the cons here but I've decided to add this in real quick because I have no idea what the hell this movie is. This movie's timeline is so screwed up I actually got a headache trying to figure out how this movie can work! I'm just going to put the following in a spoiler thing in case I accidentally spoil something for you.
So John Connor sends Kyle Reese back in time to protect Sarah Connor, but wait didn't he already do that? Some say it's an alternate universe which I guess I could believe that as they do mention alternate universes but...here's where it gets complicated. In the beginning of the movie our Arnold fights and kills...I'm serious here, no joke...the original goddamn Terminator from the original film. Yes the original Terminator from the first film gets quickly killed off. I...then wait hold on. So then Kyle Reese from the original would be sent back...but then would that mean that John Connor from "Judgment Day", "Rise of the Machines", and "Salvation" is the same John Connor from "Genisys"? Does that mean that the whole father, son bond from "Judgment Day" mean nothing because John Connor is willing to kill our Terminator? But then while the two are fighting at the end of the movie Connor tells our Terminator that "He's a relic from another timeline". So wait...is he from the original timeline? Is he the Terminator from "Judgment Day"? I'm so freaking confused. There's a crap ton of references to the original timeline as well in this movie so is this movie a sequel or a reboot? I have no damn clue.
Kyle Reese and Sarah Connor in this movie have ZERO chemistry. Most of the movie they hate each other and then at the end it's like oh well I love you now. Come on let's go make John. It just hurts, every scene with them talking hurts. Also almost all of the side/recurring characters in the movie are either terrible or just beyond bland and boring.
I never in my life would I expect a Terminator film to be WORSE then "Salvation". But it happened and Genisys shouldn't be watched by even hardcore Terminator fans. The only people I'd recommend this to are people that just want to see Arnold kicking ass.
Next time I'll be reviewing...well I haven't actually decided yet. I'm debating on doing either Ant-Man or Fantastic Four. For my next inbetween blog I'll ranking the Alien/Predator/Prometheus films from worst to best.
