Today it's like a hobby for people to shit on movies because they use a lot of CGI to make the movie work (or even not). So maybe you are one of this guys who speak about the shitty special effects and that you are glad that J. J. Abrams uses less special effects in the upcoming Star Wars movie. Well you are wrong! In fact J. J. Abrams does use a lot of special effects in Star Wars: The Force Awakens.
Okay at this point you maybe wanna hit me gently on my head because of what I just told you. Maybe you wanna show me this making of trailer which Disney published at the Comic Con few weeks ago.
Dude did you see this clip? No special effects! Of course I saw this clip and I promise you: This are actually special effects!
Probably you saw this fucking amazing (can I say fucking in here?) set picture which shows us the Millennium Falcon built in original size:
Yeah it's quite a cool ship and it's unfortunately for you special effects hater guys a special effect! Need another proof?
J. J. Abrams in front of an X-Wing Fighter (shame on me if I'm wrong). Some of you maybe tell me now that I am insane because that is obviously no special effect but I am still right.
What do you call a SPECIAL EFFECT is actually a VISUAL EFFECT. So if you shit on Jupiter Ascending because of the terrible computer generated images and tell your friends something like
"Dude the special effects of this movie are the worst."
you are actually wrong. To be right you have to say something like
"Dude the visual effects of this movie are the worst but Tatum is quit hot."
Okay you don't have to say the "Tatum is hot" part but you get it, right?
For those who don't here are some examples:
So now what is exactly a special effect? A special effect in a movie is all that stuff that is an optical illusion but is not made in a computer. So a special effect is a physically thing!
In Batman: The Dark Knight they blew up a real building so this is a special effect. Would they have made it with a computer you would call it a visual effect.
Also the Batmobile is a special effect because they built the whole mobile and used it in the movie. No CGI (okay maybe some dangerous parts which are impossible to do with a stunt car).
Also Nolan used a real spaceship in Interstellar in different sizes so around 90% of the scenes where you see a spaceship are made with models (and projectors for the space background) so this scences were also special effects.
You see Nolan is a good example of a director using as much special effects as possible. Peter Jackson is a bad example because he uses as much visual effects he can (and completely ruined The Hobbit with his obsessiv using of visual effects).
So I hope that in the future if you talk about CGI in a movie you use the correct term. Maybe your friends will don't now what are you talking about in the first place but I am sure you will explain them what you are talking about and together we can change the world.
