I love cinema! I have a special affinity for the science fiction, fantasy, and superhero genres.

Since the announcement by Warner Brothers and Hasbro of the launch of a new Dungeons and Dragons film franchise, there is now the possibility to see the premier setting of D&D, the Forgotten Realms, finally make it onto the silver screen. This is a long awaited dream for fans of the setting which was created by Ed Greenwood, and which has seen novels written for the setting including by writers such as R.A. Salvatore, Elaine Cunningham, Steven Schend, Troy Denning, and many, many others. Probably the most famous and recognizable of characters for the setting is that of the Drow elf Dizzt Do'Urden. But in any event, the setting itself (here is a 2nd edition map) is one of the richest and most detailed that one can hope to find.

Myself, I would prefer not to see Drizzt introduced right out of the gate. Let there be a buildup for that. That's just an intuitive sense that I have. But if the character isn't successfully portrayed it would be akin to getting Batman or Superman wrong for the DCEU. In other words, the stakes are high and failure would be a disaster.

I would prefer seeing them use the 2nd edition version of the campaign setting which is pre-Spellplague (a cataclysmic event that dramatically restructured the setting), as that happens to be my personal favorite. But in all likelihood they would use the current setting in which the Sundering is playing out.

Anyway, I would recommend one of two things. First, because the Baldur's Gate game series is still considered by many to still to this day remain the pinnacle of RPGs (well, okay, a bold and controversial statement to be sure), I think that is a saga that could be told on the big screen in an engaging way. There would have to be changes made to the story to make it the best possible film--that's fine, it's an adaptation of the story. I'm going to come back to this when I have more time and share my fancasting for the BG saga.

There are of course many characters, novels, and modules that have been written over the decades for this great setting; so please, by all means, propose your own favorite(s) for the franchise. And who would you cast for the main characters?

The other suggestion I have is that, very much in the D&D spirit of dreaming up a fresh campaign, why not create an adventure that is brand new using this wonderful setting? I think that would in some ways be the smartest and safest thing for the franchise to do. This means creating heroes and a story that are specifically designed to launch the D&D film franchise in the Forgotten Realms (to start).

For the latter suggestion, imagine that you have been hired as a writer for the project. I invite you to pitch what sort of tale you would love to see if it is something entirely fresh? In what area of the Realms would you set the story? Who would you cast?
