Today, Warner Brothers announced that another iconic speedster will be joining the cast of The Flash for Season 2 Wally West!

In the comics, Wally is Iris West's nephew, and during a summer visit to Central City, meets Barry Allen (and the Flash). It turns out that Wally gained his own super speed powers in a very similar accident to Barry's, and he becomes known as Kid Flash, the superhero sidekick. Later in life (and after Barry's death), he becomes The Flash himself, and has been a member of both the Teen Titans and the JLA.

For this new live-action version of the character, Wally West will be played by Keiynan Lonsdale (Insurgent, Dance Academy), and is described as "an iconic character from The Flash Universe who became the speedster known as Kid Flash.".

Executive producer Andrew Kriesberg released a statement about the choice, revealing his happiness about the casting and adding such a big DC name to the series.

Just like when we met Grant [Gustin] for the first time, we instantly knew Keiynan embodied all the heart and courage of a hero. We are so excited to be bringing this much-beloved character onto the show.

I'm thrilled to see Wally arrive on the show, and I think it's going to give us a lot of scope to see Barry struggle with the idea that he isn't unique, and that there may even be someone out there who is faster than him.

Seeing him as a mentor also changes his role quite a bit; for the first season, Barry was very much the protege to both Arrow and Dr Wells. Now, he is the one doing the teaching, and that's going to put a lot of pressure on him.

Finally, we're going to see the idea of Kid Flash impacting most, if not all, of Barry's relationships. I can't imagine that Iris or her father are going to be thrilled at the idea of their youngest family member rushing off into danger, especially given Iris's reaction to finding out Barry's secret. We'll also see how Cisco and Caitlyn feel about the idea of adding another metahuman to to the team.

Of course, we may not see any of this, as there is no guarantee that we will see Wally becoming Kid Flash at all - although I can't imagine that that would be the case. However, I do think that this is something that will happen very slowly over the course of the season. Unlike other metas who are introduced with their powers fully developed, I feel that a major character like Kid Flash will reveal themselves very slowly.

I'll also be interested to see how Wally gains his power in this universe. In the comics, Barry received his via lightning strike, rather than the Star Labs explosion that we saw in the TV series. Will Wally's powers be somehow connected to this same explosion? Perhaps he will be the victim of a lab accident while visiting the lab, which would add a whole new dimension to the character.

However they decide to include Wally West, I'm looking forward to seeing Lonsdale's take on the character, and the inclusion of a potential sidekick for Barry.

The Flash season 2 returns to the CW Oct 6th.
