The characters, based on Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's works, have come to life in numerous iterations. From stage, television, and film, Sherlock Holmes has long been a household name.
One of the more famous versions in recent years starred Robert Downey Jr. as the quick-witted titular character and Jude Law as his companion, John Watson. The 2009 film was followed by a sequel, Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, two years later.
When promoting his upcoming spy movie, The Man From U.N.C.L.E., producer Lionel Wigram had time to discuss the possibility of bringing back Guy Ritchie’s Sherlock Holmes for round three and that a screenplay is in the works! Wigram told IGN during an interview:
We’re working on a Sherlock Holmes 3 script. I think we would all love to do one if we could come up with something that really was really going to knock it out of the park and was going to be the best of the three. So we’re working on that – it’s quite hard to do.
But the question remains: Will Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law be reprising their roles of Sherlock Holmes and his dear Watson? According to Wigram, they're both "Very. Very." interested.
Very, very, you say? Well that sounds pretty promising to me!
With RDJ tied in with the slate of upcoming Marvel movies, it might be difficult for him to find the time to do another Sherlock, but I remain hopeful. But if they aren't able to lock in their two main characters, is a third installment even worth making?
