Ever felt alone? Scared? Unable to be yourself? Feeling out of place and like you don't fit in is common, and these characters remind you that you're not the only one. But the most important lesson that they teach us is who we should be - ourselves!
Here are 6 lovable characters from our favorite shows that remind us that we should be proud of who we are:
Mulan does not fit in. She is expected to "bring honor" and is pressured into being something she doesn't want to be. She is not like the other women. But Mulan shows us just how badass women can be and how to overcome oppression. She teaches us that we can do anything, and we can do it as good as or even better then men. Mulan is brave, strong and she's a good role model for women everywhere. You can be whoever you want to be and you don't have to act like a certain gender either; you don't have to wear dresses if you're a woman for example, and can be as adventurous as you want to be - you can even climb a long wooden pole whilst singing "I'll Make a Man Out of You" if you like!
2). The Big Bang Theory Gang
Feel like a nerd? Bullied for being smart? These awesome guys from The Big Bang Theory show us how cool it is to be a nerd. I'd love friends like these - I'd fit right in! It's a good thing to be intelligent and don't let anyone make you feel bad for being smart and wanting to get your homework done on time! None of these characters are perfect - for example Raj can't talk to women, Howard still lives with his mother and is obsessed with the ladies (before he met Bernadette) and Sheldon... well, he has a few "unique" qualities. But these guys are good, loveable people and they don't pretend to be someone else - and that's what you should do too. Nerdy is the new cool.
3). Elliot Reid
We have all been where Elliot was at the beginning of Scrubs. She struggled a lot to get by and fit in, was always putting her foot in her mouth, trying to impress her parents and at one point she was homeless whilst trying to do the best she could at Sacred Heart. But Elliot wasn't a bad person, or terrible at her job, and when watching Scrubs we get to see Elliot blossom into a confident doctor. She teaches us that with a bit more faith in yourself you can accomplish your dreams. Remember to not be so hard on yourself! She's also very clumsy and always attempts to shrug it off - which is so awesome. It's OK to be awkward - embrace it!
4). The Griffin Family
They are an unusual family, aren't they? But I love them! The Griffin family show us that it's normal to be part of a crazy family, and that you're not the only one who has embarrassing parents. The characters from the much loved comedy also have their own issues, and I think Meg is the best example of this: she gets bullied at school and people think she's uncool, and even her own family pick on her ("Shut up, Meg!"). But Meg carries on living a normal life and being herself, showing us that we all have these feelings of thinking we're ugly, letting people's comments get to us and struggling with life and school or work. This is OK! We all go through this, but just remember to never change and keep on persevering because one day you will be in a better place!
5). Phoebe Buffay
I love Phoebe. She's quirky and fun and even though she's a little odd, she's happy - and this shows us the importance of being you. If you are pretending to be someone else, or "normal" to fit in, then you are going to be unhappy. Be as crazy as you want to be and hang around with people who like you for who you are. Then you will be happy, and one of the best things in life is to be around people who make you laugh and make you feel comfortable in their company. We should all take a leaf from Phoebe's book!
6). George Bailey
George Bailey from It's a Wonderful Life is a good man plagued with self-doubt. He seems to end up having one problem after another and eventually he can take no more, and wishes that he hadn't of even been born. He puts all of his dreams and wants on hold, and there is no other man that deserves to have his desires more than George Bailey. He has a kind soul, and he teaches us that even the best of us have to suffer the worst, and what you must do is tell others. Let your friends and family know that there is something wrong - then they can help you to be happy again. George Bailey is a great example of how to be, and to believe in yourself more.
We can relate to all of these characters, and despite their troubles and their flaws, we should take valuable lessons from their experiences and learn from them. We owe them a big thank you to making us feel better about ourselves and proud to be in our own skin.
So remember - be you! And have a great day :)
