I have always been a huge fan of horror films from the '70s and '80s. Halloween and Friday the 13th are some of my favorite franchises of all time, but Nightmare on Elm Street was the one film that truly terrified me. Freddy Krueger murdering people who were defenseless in their dreams always sent chills down my spine. I usually don't mind a lot of the new-day horror remakes, but 2010's Nightmare on Elm Street was lackluster at best. I really was not a fan and it did not capture the essence of the original films Luckily for us, it seems as if there is another Elm Street remake in the works, but will they get it right this time?
Will this Re-Make succeed?
My main issue with the 2010 Nightmare film was the look of Freddy Krueger. He wasn't terrifying at all, with his leathery smooth skin and overall just weird appearance, he failed to impress. Jackie Earle Haley just could not live up to the legend of Robert Englund and give fans a quality Freddy on screen. If they want this new film to succeed then they have to absolutely nail the casting of Freddy.
Who will play Freddy Krueger?
It is unlikely that Robert Englund would return to the role of Freddy. That being said, I believe that there are a few big name actors that could fill that role successfully.
3. Kevin Bacon
Kevin Bacon has always been a very interesting actor. He has always had a creepy vibe to him that I believe is essential to have when playing Freddy Krueger. He also has the look that would go along with it. Granted, he would be covered in make up and other aesthetics but facial structure matters and Kevin Bacon could give a quality representation of what Freddie Krueger should look and act like.
2. Steve Buscemi
Steve Buscemi has always been a favorite actor of mine. Whenever I think of the stereotypical odd character, I instantly think of Steve. That's not all he can do however, as he really expressed his acting range by starring in the HBO drama Boardwalk Empire. Steve Buscemi would be great if he were Freddie Kreuger. He would be a bit of a change of pace from what we normally see from a Kreuger flick. He could bring a kind of change similar to what Heath Ledger did with The Joker onscreen. He would be a more more cynical and slower murderer, and I would love to see Steve strap on the claws and devour people's dreams.
1. Willem Dafoe
Willem Dafoe is, in my opinion , one of the all time great actors. My personal favorite role of his was of course Norman Osbourne in Sam Raimi's Spider-Man. Having portrayed the Green Goblin, he is as cynical as they come and would be great as Freddy. Dafoe has limitless range when it comes to his acting ability and I believe he is tailor made for the role of Freddy Kreuger; he has it all, the look, the voice, the eerie vibe, etc. Like I said before, nobody is coming close to Robert Englund, but Willem Dafoe may be the next best thing.
