Every comic has a chance to be a TV show these days. And so, it should be no when a comic about the devil running a nightclub will grace the small screen.
Here is Everything We Know About Lucifer
The Characters -
Played by Merlin's Tom Ellis, Lucifer Morningstar is the devil. He becomes bored leading Hell and decides to abandon his position to move to L.A. and open a nightclub named Lux. He is handsome, charismatic, and charming, and likes to indulge himself in women, song, and wine. After a murder at his club, Lucifer decides to work with the police to solve murders.
Mazikeen (aka Maze)
One of the few people Lucifer actually likes, Maze is Lucifer's best friend. She is a fierce demon who takes on the form of a young woman (in this case, the form of Lesley-Ann Brandt). In the comics, she has a unique face as one side is gorgeous while the other is disfigured. Her facial deformity is so bad that it impairs her speech. She was created by Neil Gaiman and first appeared in Sandman.
Brandt is a familiar face in the DC T.V. universe. She played Copperhead, a deadly assassin, in the first season of Gotham.
The L.A.P.D. detective that investigates a crime at Lux. She, of course, dismisses Lucifer at first. But, also of course, she becomes fascinated (and repulsed) by him. Lucifer is intrigued by her "inherent goodness". She gives him so hope for humanity.
D.B. Woodside will play the angel, Amenadiel. He is an emissary that God sent to convince Lucifer to return to his post in Hell.
Rachael Harris (The Hangover) will play Kim Martian, a therapist whom Lucifer encounters while working on a case and whom he later returns to for advice. Scarlett Estevez portrays Trixie, Chloe's daughter.
From the Fox website:
The Devil has come to Los Angeles…
Based upon the characters created by Neil Gaiman, Sam Kieth and Mike Dringenberg for DC Entertainment’s Vertigo imprint, LUCIFER is the story of the original fallen angel. Bored and unhappy as the Lord of Hell, LUCIFER MORNINGSTAR (Tom Ellis, “Merlin”) has abandoned his throne and retired to L.A., where he owns Lux, an upscale nightclub.
Charming, charismatic and devilishly handsome, Lucifer is enjoying his retirement, indulging in a few of his favorite things – wine, women and song – when a beautiful pop star is brutally murdered outside of Lux. For the first time in roughly 10 billion years, he feels something awaken deep within him as a result of this murder. Compassion? Sympathy? The very thought disturbs him – as well as his best friend and confidante, MAZIKEEN aka MAZE (Lesley-Ann Brandt, “The Librarians”), a fierce demon in the form of a beautiful young woman.
The murder attracts the attention of LAPD homicide detective CHLOE DANCER (Lauren German, “Chicago Fire”), who initially is dismissive of Lucifer. But she becomes intrigued by his talent for drawing out people’s secrets and his desire to dispense justice, doling out punishment to those who deserve it. As they work together to solve the pop star’s murder, Lucifer is struck by Chloe’s inherent goodness. Accustomed to dealing with the absolute worst of humanity, Lucifer is intrigued by Chloe’s apparent purity and begins to wonder if there’s hope for his own soul yet.
At the same time, God’s emissary, the angel AMENADIEL (DB Woodside, “Suits,” “24”), has been sent to Los Angeles to convince Lucifer to return to the underworld…can the Devil incarnate be tempted toward the side of Good, or will his original calling pull him back toward Evil?
It is different than the comic because the show will be more of a procedural. He will probably not travel to different realms. He will stay mostly in L.A. They say it is a much more grounded.
Here is what D.B. Woodside told Hitfix.
“If you’re coming to ‘Lucifer’ to see the comic book, you are not going to see it. Let it go."
When It Airs and other details
Fox has said it will be part of their 2016 slate.
Lina Esco was originally cast as Maze, before she was replaced.
Here is the trailer.
The series has caused some controversy lately. On 28 May 2015, the American Family Association and One Million Moms started identical online petitions urging followers stop FOX from carrying through with their plans for the series, protesting that the show would “glorify Satan as a caring, likable person in human flesh” and “mischaracterize Satan”. (On a personal note, I don't agree. I think Fox is just trying to create a fun T.V. show. I don't think they want to step on anyone's religion. Neither do I.)
