There are so many creepy locations you can visit around the world, but I think I've found by far the creepiest thing this earth has to offer. An island of dolls. Not happy looking children's dolls, but decapitated, blood covered and reportedly possessed dolls. Sounds fun, right?
Following a two hour boat ride from the heart of Mexico City, you'll come across a clearing deep in the forest filled with the creepy mutilated dolls, some of which have been there for over FIFTY years. The original collection of dolls were placed there by a local man named Julian Santana Barrera, who passed away in 2001. Mr Barrera started collecting and hanging dolls in the trees to appease the spirit of a young girl whom he found dead in a canal near his house.
Why dolls? Well, when Barrera found the young girls body in the river, nearby was floating a doll of hers. So naturally, he hung it up in a nearby tree as a mark of respect. Ever since her death, he started the slow descent into madness, and as time went on, he began to hear footsteps, whispers, and screams of the young woman who had passed. So Barrera started to hang more dolls in the trees, in a hope that it would please the spirit and he would be left in piece.
Thing is, in 2001 Barrera was found dead in the SAME canal the young girl died in 50 years earlier. Coincidence? I think not. Since his passing, hundreds of tourists visit the clearing every year, sometimes leaving dolls of their own. Some people claim they can hear dolls whispering, and often feel like the dolls are watching them as they make their way around the area.
In a recent trip, photographer Cindy Vasko claims it to be the creepiest place she has ever visited.
