Being present at Gamescom this week makes the wait for Mass Effect: Andromeda even more arduous. There are so many titles present at the show that are nowhere near an official release date - but are actually in playable form. Mass Effect 4 may be a long way off, but that doesn't alleviate the pressure that Bioware are under to succeed after Dragon Age: Inquisition and especially Mass Effect 3.
However, it's one piece of upsetting news that has placed even more expectation on Bioware's continuation of the Mass Effect series. Half-Life 3 has apparently been in development for years, but now with a skeleton crew of about ten people working on it, it looks like it will never get a release date.
Mass Effect 4: Andromeda Under Pressure Following Upsetting Half-Life 3 News
Thanks to an anonymous source from within Valve, The Know were able to reveal the current status of one of the most anticipated games of all time - and it wasn't good news. Due to two particular reasons, Valve see no reason to ever release the continuation of the Half-Life series.
- Reason One - they are making so much money from Steam, DOTA 2, Team Fortress 2 and Counter Strike: GO alone (an approximate three quarters of a billion dollars a year), that the profits they'd make from Half-Life 3 just wouldn't make sense for the amount of effort it would require to develop.
- Reason Two - After having seen the backlash against Mass Effect 3 and other titles and developers following gamer's disappointment, Valve sees no reason to incur the wrath of certain delusional gamers that feel that Half-Life 3 is owed to them and should be nothing short of amazing.
"So does this aspect of the story make sense? It's not really a question of whether it's true or not, it's more understanding that Valve believes that hype levels are so high around Half-Life 3 and that gamers act so hateful when they're disappointed that there's no point in really trying to release the game." - The Know
We've seen how hateful certain individuals in the gaming community can be. Countless examples of misogyny, docking, sexism, harassment and even bomb threats that have grounded planes pervade this industry. It's an upsetting aspect of the art from that we adore and in recent years it has become increasingly worse. Half-Life 3 will probably never see a release date thanks to the small group of hate-filled gamers, and I think that has put far too much pressure on Mass Effect 4.
What Do You Expect From the Release Date of Mass Effect: Andromeda?
Bioware have got to come back from creating one of the most hated plot-lines in gaming history. The developers actually had to expand upon the ending in a free expansion due to the enormous degree of pressure they were placed under. Mass Effect: Andromeda is going to have to come back after that scandal and I'm sure certain individuals will be unhappy with its achievements.
Nevertheless, Mass Effect: Andromeda is still a game that I can't wait to play on XBOX One, PS4 or PC. I seriously hope that Bioware aren't intimidated by the release date of Mass Effect 4 and that they can develop the title without a burdening sensation of anxiety. What do you think about the news? Do you feel they owe you something after Mass Effect 3? Let us know in the comments!
