I doubt it's ever actually recommended for actors to get stinking drunk before filming certain scenes. Yet, it appears that it does sometimes happen - whether accidentally, on purpose to bide the time, or to calm those jittery nerves before acting out a particular moment on screen.
The following actors and actresses have admitted to throwing back a few before the cameras get rolling. Let's find out who!
1. Margot Robbie in The Wolf of Wall Street
Unsurprisingly, Margot was quite nervous filming her nude scenes with Leo DiCaprio - after all, this man essentially created the Pussy Posse and is arguably one of the greatest actors of this generation. So, in order to prep for the first intimate shoot, the actress said she took three shots of tequila to calm her nerves.
Dutch courage at its best.
Maybe that's why Margot also seemed so confident doing THIS scene:
2. Johnny Depp in The Rum Diary
In the spirit of Hunter S. Thompson, Johnny Depp and the movie's director Bruce Robinson had a bottle of Chivas Regal with them at all moments during the filming process.
A bottle, that Johnny liked to sample rather often, apparently.
3. Brad Pitt & Ed Norton in Fight Club
Do you remember that short scene when the Narrator and Tyler Durden come out of the bar and drunkenly hit golf balls somewhere into the darkness? Well, they weren't acting.
Apparently, the two had been on quite the drinking spree during downtime and director David Fincher happened to be filming them when they were trying to hit the canteen trailer. He reportedly fed the pair a couple of lines and rolled the cameras as the two actors stumbled about, resulting in a few minutes of cinema gold!
4. Mila Kunis & Natalie Portman in Black Swan
The director of the movie revealed that Natalie and Mila shared a bottle of tequila to loosen up before getting right into their sex scene in Black Swan.
So now you know - these two were full-on smashed in this clip:
5. Billy Bob Thornton in Bad Santa
Bad Santa is a Christmas classic, partly because it is perhaps one of the most vulgar and cynical festive movies out there. Billy Bob plays Willie, an alcoholic department store Santa, who, as expected, is hammered most of the time.
And to get into the role, Thornton has admitted to often actually getting drunk during the filming process. The end product was essentially something like this:
6. Robert Pattinson in The Rover
On the set of dystopian film The Rover, in the sizzling temperatures of the Australian Outback, Robert Pattinson would swig alcohol to help him deal with the harsh filming conditions.
Guy Pearce, the director, revealed:
"He drank more vodka than I advised him to drink."
But thankfully, Rob handled himself really well, despite being absolutely wrecked in many of the scenes. Can you guess which?
7. Jennifer Lawrence in The Hunger Games
According to the J-Law, on the set of Catching Fire, she was often so bored having to wait around to be called onto the set, she would sip on Pina Coladas in her trailer.
8. Daniel Radcliffe in Harry Potter
Since admitting to battling alcohol addiction, Daniel Radcliffe has also revealed that during the filming of Harry Potter, he was often intoxicated in front of the camera. He once said:
“I went into work still drunk [...] I can point to many scenes where I’m just gone. Dead behind the eyes.”
9. Shia LaBeouf in Lawless
While working on Lawless, a movie about three brothers running a bootlegging operation in Virginia during Prohibition, Shia was often pretty hammered on set. Apparently he drank moonshine to "get into character."
Reportedly, he was frequently so intoxicated he would get quite aggressive, with co-star Mia Wasikowska admitting she even tried to quit the movie because she felt uncomfortable working with him.
10. Martin Sheen in Apocalypse Now
Apocalypse Now took 16 months to shoot, during which time much of the cast and crew got so stressed and depressed that director Francis Ford Coppola considered committing suicide and Martin Sheen had a heart attack. Unsurprisingly, they turned to drink.
In particular, Sheen was incredibly boozed up in the opening scene in a hotel room. He got drunk before the shoot and Coppola just told the crew to start filming. And it seems that a drunk Sheen delivered - he punched a mirror, cut his hand when it shattered, starting weeping and then almost attacked the director off-camera.
Relive the moment right here:
11. Robert Shaw in Jaws
Remember the scene where Shaw gets drunk below deck with the other cast members and delivers the Indianapolis speech? Apparently, the director actually suggested he have a drink beforehand to make it more realistic. Yet, instead of having just one or two, Shaw apparently got so wasted he completely blacked out, delaying filming the scene by an entire day.
They had to redo it the next day, when he'd sobered up a little:
12. Neve Campbell, Denise Richards & Matt Dillon in Wild Things
Wild Things is really aptly named, considering it has perhaps one of the most wild scenes ever - a threesome between Campbell, Richards and Dillon.
In order to make the filming process slightly less awkward, the three actors did a fair bit of drinking before shedding their clothes in front of the camera.
13. Julie Andrews in The Sound of Music
Yep, you read that one right.
Julie Andrews has herself admitted that she was a bit drunk in the Do-Re-Mi Alps sequence in the iconic musical. She said that the farmer owning the land made his own schnapps in the near-by barn where she would regularly practice her guitar. He kept giving her shots to gulp down, so by the time it came to film the scene, she was pretty plastered. She said:
"We were way up in the Alps on a really blustery cold day and the farmer made his own schnapps and very generously handed out a small measure to the people that were on the camera and to all of us."
