As reviews for The Fantastic Four pour in like scathing lava, the cast's interviews are surfacing with more information about what did and did not make it into the final cut of the film.
One such instance was a scene where Ben Grimm first sees Sue Storm at the home of the Richards family. In a recent interview with Comic Book Movie, Kate Mara (Sue Storm), Michael B. Jordan (Johnny Storm) and Jamie Bell (Ben Grimm) detailed the scene, and while it seems like a nice way to introduce the characters, it's obvious why it was cut:
Bell: I had a scene with Kate and apparently it's cut! I was really excited about it!
Mara: It was so cute. Apparently not. Apparently it was too cute.
Bell: Apparently it was too cute because we're like not the love interest, so..."
Jordan: I have no idea what they're talking about.
Mara: You wouldn't because it was a scene between [Jamie and I]!
Bell: It was a scene where Dr. Storm is at Reed's house trying to tell his parents how talented Reed is and Reed's parents are going like, 'Okay, we don't know what our son is, but okay.' And she's kind of waiting outside and I come to, like, Reed's house, and I'm like, kind of awkward cause she's a girl and I'm like, 'What's going on in there? What are they talking about? Is he gonna be alright? Do I need to take care of this?' But really I played the scene with a superstar, it was kind of fun.
Mara: And that was the first thing I shot. It wasn't the first scene you shot.
Bell: Right. But it was fun. Cut.
Too cute for the final cut? Maybe, but showing a connection between the characters might have been nice. When it comes to relationships, it's not uncommon that the best friend and love interest band together to act as a supporting net for the person they care about, so showing the two of them interacting in a scene that concerned Reed Richards' future might have been a welcome addition to the otherwise dark film.
The Fantastic Four is out now in theaters.
