Once in a while, there comes a game so enjoyable that it has you counting down the hours till you get home from school/work or wherever you are so you can play. Once in a while comes a game so engaging that you're constantly thinking about how can you get better at it. Once in a while you find a game that is so addictive that while writing about it you can't help but ask yourself "why am I not playing instead right now?". That game for me, is currently Rocket League. What is it about this game that has me and so many others hooked? I'm glad you asked.

1) The simple yet beautiful concept

The FIFA games are among the most popular sports games in existence. Year after year, EA makes some minor tweaks and fans line up to get their hands on the latest edition of the soccer game. Another popular EA franchise is the car racing success - Need For Speed. Some genius wondered what would happen if these two were put together. That is, if soccer was played with cars. The result is absurd, simple and gloriously beautiful, Rocket League marries the elegance of the beautiful game of soccer with the thrill, urgency and speed of vehicular battle.

2) A level playing field

If you like me, have at times jumped into an online game a few weeks late - you know it's hard out there. It's really challenging to be the newcomer and not be terrible, and hold your own against experienced veterans with their upgraded weapons and character tweaks. Rocket League puts you at no such disadvantage. The only advantage anyone else has over you is practice and skill. All the upgrades that are unlocked are for visual appeal only. You can quickly get a grip of the game and ensure you're not the weakest link in your team. I've only been playing a week and have already been the "most valuable player" in matches with others that have been playing much longer. This speaks to how accessible the game is. The training modes will take half an hour of your time and ensure you know every trick in the book that a pro does.

3) Every match is different

This argument can be made for any sports game but I feel it's more significant for Rocket League. There'll be matches where someone's scoring every 30 seconds and there'll be almost goalless matches. There'll be matches where you'll see cars flying and taking unbelievable shots and there'll be ones in which the only goal comes from a nudge in the right direction. No two games of Rocket League are alike which is what leads to everyone telling themselves "just one more match" at 2am when they have to be up in a few hours.

And that is why I'm going to stop writing now and go play again, and if you haven't checked out this game yet you absolutely should! It has over-performed to the extent that servers are constantly overburdened and not even that will stop players from coming back for more. As someone that's been playing games since I was six years old and got a PlayStation One, rarely have I come across a game as ridiculously fun and addictive as Rocket League.
