As someone who has seen practically every superhero film ever made, I can hold my head up high and say that I absolutely loved Fantastic Four. It has a different vibe to the films from the Marvel and DC cinematic universe, which I believe worked in its favour. I found it entertaining, beautiful, and downright thrilling at times.
This movie is based around the origin story of The Fantastic Four. I for one did not know the story behind these four super-beings, which made the film that much more riveting to watch. I choose not to describe the plot, because that can take away the element of surprise.
What really makes this film stand-out from other Marvel/DC movies is the time and respect given to developing the plot. I enjoyed every single minute of the early to mid-stages of Fantastic Four. It was refreshing to get to know the heroes intimately before being plunged into epic action sequences.
I also enjoyed the performances of the cast members. Their characters came across completely unique to me, which also had a lot to do with their background story not being rushed.
Storyline and acting aside, there are brilliant elements to Fantastic Four. I absolutely adore the score by Marco Beltrami & Philip Glass, which was both epic and emotional. The visual effects were wonderful, particularly during the discovery of 'Planet Zero' sequence. I really loved the look of the amazing super-powers. The Thing looked incredible to me, as did The Human Torch.
My absolute favourite design would be that of Dr. Doom. I found this villain very intimidating in both look and characteristics. He'd have to be up there with my favourite cinematic villains.
All you really need to know is that you may still enjoy this movie. A lot of people have valid reasons to dislike it, while I suspect others may just hate it because that's a popular thing to do right now.
The important thing is that you go see this movie yourself!!!
This movie sets the base in which action-packed stories involving The Fantastic Four will be grounded on. It certainly accomplished that goal in my eyes. I feel deeply connected to the characters and can't wait to see more of them!
Unfortunately, I doubt that will become a reality due to the overwhelming negative attention it's received. In my eyes, this is one of the greatest superhero films ever made.
