WWE SummerSlam takes place on August 23rd LIVE on the WWE Network (or a Pay Per View provider). It is the WWE's biggest SummerSlam ever as it will run for Four hours and feature the in-ring return of the WWE's Legend: The Undertaker.
I wrote an article last month chronicling the rumors of Undertaker's return at Battleground, arguing how WWE could could emulate a similar story to that of the Batman film: The Dark Knight Rises. Well it looks as if WWE did just that as the rumours came true last month and the Deadman himself rose to attack the Beast that conquered his Streak, Brock Lesnar, immediately creating a far more interesting story than the one they were engaged in last year.
Last year, the Undertaker and Brock Lesnar reignited their rivalry from 12 years prior which lead to a physically gruelling, infamous match at WrestleMania XXX in which Lesnar once again defeated the Undertaker and shockingly ended his 21 year long undefeated streak at the event. Just as the beast-like Bane decimated Batman in The Dark Knight Rises and the Mutant leader did the same in the graphic novel The Dark Knight Returns, this new predator Brock Lesnar decimated the legendary warrior.
Last year, the Undertaker was not in his best shape. He looked unusally thin, his facde looked old and haggard, plus the Ministry beard and bald head did not help his appearance at all. He also suffered a concussion early into his match with Lesnar and did not perform to his usual standard. The injury and his age did not help when in the ring with someone as aggressive as Lesnar and after the match, the Deadman was hospitalised.
However just like both the Batman film and the graphic novel, the veteran has risen from the shadows and is looking for revenge against the one man he has never beaten in singles competition.
At WWE Battleground, Lesnar was set to regain the WWE World Heavyweight Championship from Seth Rollins when the arena descended into one of the Undertaker's legendary blackouts. When the lights returned to the arena, the Phenom himself was waiting and he subsequently destroyed his WrestleMania foe, laying Lesnar out with a Chokeslam and two Tombstone Piledrivers. The next night on RAW, the Undertaker announced that he was tired of hearing Lesnar and Heyman bragging about breaking the Streak and vowed to Conquer the Conquerer. So at SummerSlam, the stage is set for Undertaker vs Lesnar II (Really their fifth encounter if you count their previous matches from 2002-2003) in what is being billed as "The Biggest Rematch in WWE History".
The Undertaker may have looked like a beaten, broken man last year but that is far from the case today. Now, the not only looks reinvigorated (with longer hair, his normal beard and he's in his best shape in years), his in-ring ability is much better than it appeared last year. The violent brawl between the Undertaker and Lesnar on RAW a couple of weeks ago sent the WWE Universe into a frenzy and both shocked and excited people around the world. The entire WWE locker room and Chief Operating Officer Triple H could not keep these two monsters apart as the anomsity boiled over. This Undertaker is more than capable of putting Lesnar in his place! Both superstars gave as good as they got with Lesnar screeching "I will kill you!" to the Deadman, to which the Undertaker responded "You're gonna have to!".
I have to applaud WWE for writing these two into a far more compelling storyline than the one they has last year. The Beast is angry and the Deadman is not the fragile veteran he was last year, he is a reinvigorated Phenom out for Lesnar's soul.
Lesnar is looking to give the Undertaker's career it's Last Rites, while the Deadman is looking to Conquer the Conquerer and be the one to do what nobody can do: Slay the Beast!
Their collision course is set to culminate in the main event at SummerSlam when the Titans clash in what could be their most physical battle yet.
