When I was younger I was given some valuable advice that actors and actresses would be wise to heed more often: Don't dip your pen in the company ink, i.e. don't sleep with your TV co-star and then dump them if your characters are going to be dating for the next 3 seasons!

These following couples didn't follow that advice, all forced to work with each other amid emotional break ups, faking love on camera while trying desperately to suppress their turbulent romantic histories. Check out some of the most awkward examples below, but be warned: the following content is positively cringe-worthy!

Kaley Cuoco and Johnny Galecki

In a case of life imitating art, Big Bang Theory stars Cuoco and Galecki followed the hearts of their fictional characters, dating both on screen and off. The pair began a relationship in secret which lasted almost 2 years, but though they've now broken up, they still have to pretend to be passionate lovers on set. Can you imagine how hard that would be with an ex?!

What's worse is that Cuoco is now married to tennis star Ryan Sweeting, and Galecki has remained somewhat of a third wheel in the relationship. He sat in the front row of his co-star's wedding and even personally thanked Ryan on Cuoco's behalf after she awkwardly forgot to do it herself! Watch the uncomfortable moment below:

With divorce rumors now surrounding Cuoco's marriage, one can wonder whether this old flame is quietly being rekindled. All that on screen affection can't be easy for Sweeting to watch!

Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson

The Twilight twosome were tucked up in real life, but split in 2012 after Kristen, 24, had an affair with married director Rupert Sanders, 43. Rob reportedly found a text on Kristen's phone sent by Sanders on the worst possible day. As a source told Hollywood Life that:

Rob was looking at her phone on the morning of his birthday... Suddenly this message flashes up [from Rupert Sanders] and it’s not what he wanted to see. He got straight up and left.

This would all be an unfortunate, yet survivable happen-stance had the two simply gone their separate ways, but the estranged pair still had the entire promotional tour for Breaking Dawn Part 2 ahead of them. R-Patz refused to talk to Kristen for much of it, and interviews were often conducted separately. Awks...

Ian Somerhalder and Nina Dobrev

Vampire Diaries sweethearts Ian Somerhalder and Nina Dobrev dated each other in real life between 2011 to 2013, but the show's writers didn't care that their off screen love had fizzled out, forcing them to carry on getting down and dirty on camera.

Ever the professionals, the blood-sucking duo still managed to put on a pretty convincing act, winning the 'Best Chemistry' award at the People’s Choice Awards.

Adam Brody and Rachel Bilson

The OC's Seth and Summer seemed like the most perfect pairing imaginable; the steamy on screen romance was so potent it brought the co-stars together in real life. However, unlike their Newport beach-hailing counterparts, Brody and Bilson were not meant to be, breaking up a year before the show ended. Their on set split must've made this scene extra awkward to film!

I wonder if either regretted not meeting each other at the alter in real life...

Jennifer Garner and Michael Vartan

These Alias co-stars dated for a year back in 2003, though Garner ultimately ended up marrying Ben Affleck. In a twisted turn of fate, these former lovers were forced into wedlock, their characters being married on the show. However, when the wedding scene was filmed Garner was pregnant with Affleck's baby; a surreal situation for all involved.

Garner is now getting a divorce with Affleck, with rumors circulating that she's been leaning on Vartan for support...and maybe something else?

Sophia Bush and Chad Michael Murray

These One Tree Hill heartthrobs hooked up back in 2003, tying the knot just 2 years later. After 6 months of matrimony the couple were divorced, yet still had to go to work with each other every day to feign an on screen romance. What a nightmare!
