Lara Croft returns in Rise of the Tomb Raider. This latest gameplay from Gamescom shows us just how far Lara will go to uncover and protect the world's hidden treasures. Tomb Raider is back with a bang!

The undisputed Queen of archaeology is back courtesy of Square Enix and Crystal Dynamics in Rise of the Tomb Raider. In this edition, Lara will not only have to overcome the extremes that mother nature can throw at her, but face up to challenges and powers that even the legendary name of Lara Croft will struggle to overthrow.

Lara is looking sleeker than ever, but apart from how good she looks in this latest edition here are a further 5 reasons why I can't wait for Rise of The Tomb Raider.

1. It’s a Darker Journey

In Tomb Raider (2013); our hero, Lara Croft, is thrust into a world where hope is scarce and sacrifice is common. As a result of this, Lara is forced to learn the art of survival, she was forced to react to her surroundings; this was the trigger that began her evolution to become the hardened gaming icon we know and love today.

In Rise of the Tomb Raider, however, Lara is proactive; she puts herself in front of danger, she is no longer simply reacting to her environment, she is controlling it. Lara can and now will readily kill anyone that stands in her way.

The latest footage from Gamescom gives us our first look at the character’s more “persuasive” side. Lara Croft is now, full on bad ass. Forget Son of Rambo, apparently they focused on the wrong sibling!

Lara is now a formidable force to be reckoned with, she snaps necks and slits throats as she sweeps through the camp like a deadly assassin. At one point we see her effortlessly dispatch a target after stalking him in the water, pulling him under and holding him there just long enough for him to weaken before pitilessly snapping his neck. More Tomb Stone than Tomb Raider, but I loved it!

Ok, we’re not quite in the Dying Light territory here, but for the series to date, it certainly is a lot darker than before.

Lara is now an adept killer, she has gone from prey to predator. We can clearly see that Croft is on a journey, not just an adventure. This journey is one that will have us all clinging to the edge of the sofa.

The things she has done, and the lives she has taken no longer have a hold on her soul. She’s becoming who she was always meant to be!

2. It’s Huge

Tomb Raider touts outstanding graphics with beautiful scenery which definitely matches the scope of which the game was designed. In this latest chapter the world is over three times bigger than that of the previous title. And, not only is the sheer size greater but the depth is increasing too.

We now have a world that is loaded with flora and fauna that even Tarzan would struggle to swing through. Just be mindful of the local wildlife mind, Yogi and Boo Boo are not as pic-a-nic loving as you might remember.

Rise of the Tomb Raider is taking us to places we have never been before. Get ready to immerse yourself in some of the most beautifully hostile places on earth.

3. Choose Your Own Game Style

Use the environment to your advantage, this edition of Tomb Raider caters to all styles of gaming. It is now a completely non linear experience – the game will rarely push a player into an area of gameplay they are not familiar with or they don’t enjoy. For example, the stealth lovers could potentially play through the entire game only having to kill one or two enemies. They can sneak, distract and stun their way through the story.

On the other hand, the action junkies out there can go through the entire campaign without entering into a single stealthy position. Running and gunning to their hearts content.

Lara will have multiple ways of achieving her objectives, there is no predetermined path for her to take. The environment is set up to cater to all play styles, whether you use distraction tactics, the stealth approach or even trusty shotgun sally, in Rise of the Tomb Raider, we make the rules.

4. Tomb Raiding Is Back

We’re going to basics people. We are finally ready to take back the crown from Nic Cage as the best and now way more attractive treasure hunter. Crystal Dynamics have listened to the fans and made the titular element the main staple of our adventure.

Lost and forgotten underground cities, golden temples and mythical tales of immortality are all up for the taking as we herald the triumphant return of Tomb Raider.

Of course it wouldn’t be a treasure hunt without the bad guys that are inevitably hunting the same treasures. Stay sharp whilst exploring the tunnels, caves and tombs as they will most likely want to keep all the gold for themselves.

5. The Crafting Skills Are Tight

Crafting plays a major role in this edition of Tomb Raider. Lara will be able to increase and upgrade her skills, abilities and strength as she progresses through the game.

Crafting will be key to overcoming the elements, the enemies and the puzzles. For example; part of the crafting skill tree, will see Lara’s ability to learn foreign and ancient languages. This will come in handy when exploring those ancient ruins looking for clues in the hieroglyphics or when eavesdropping upon a bad guy conversation.

Oh, and the developers say that the skill tree is so deep that you will be unable to unlock everything in one play through. This means we will most likely be playing this game well into 2017!

To conclude, Rise of the Tomb Raider promises to be one heck of an exciting game that will definitely get the blood pumping and will allow us all to get passionately invested into our leading lady. Rise is now an undoubtedly unique gaming experience that brings the refreshment needed for this popular and iconic franchise. It will also no doubt come with a stellar soundtrack that will immerse us in total gaming bliss as the world falls in love with Lara Croft Tomb Raider all over again.

Rise of the Tomb Raider releases November 10th, on Xbox One, Xbox 360, PlayStation 4 and PC
