Naughty Dog have a rich and glorious history in the gaming industry. Everything they've created has helped them progress into the critically acclaimed studio they are today. Their beginnings were humble, and of course as I child I never knew I was engaging with their products as I played the shit out of the Jak and Daxter series and my beloved Crash Bandicoot.
But each franchise they worked on still has its merits. You can see their love for great characters, engaging stories, entertaining gameplay and dedication to quality since 1984. They've worked with EA and Universal, but their most famous collaborations have been with Sony. Their games have been must-plays on Playstation systems since Crash Bandicoot. Therefore, I hope that The Last of Us 2 celebrates their legacy, by including my favorite aspects of all of their most successful series.
The Last of Us 2 & The Celebration of the Naughty Dog Legacy on Playstation
As always, I'd love to hear your opinions on what you want to see from The Last of Us 2. Was The Last of Us your favorite game that the company has created to date? Does it rival Uncharted? Or has Naughty Dog yet to beat the glory days of Crash Bandicoot? Be sure to let us know where you stand in the comments below!
Crash Bandicoot 2: Crotex Strikes Back is probably my favorite of the Crash games, even though Crash Bandicoot: Warped is the more critically acclaimed title. These games have so much that The Last of Us 2 should continue to celebrate. Naughty Dog's perfectionist team imbued these games with astounding visuals, great music, audio design, entertaining characters, tough and varied levels, which ultimately lead to reviewers making statements like "Crash Bandicoot: Warped brings a barrage of good things which all come together perfectly." The Last of Us 2 needs to continue its legacy.
Jak and Daxter
What I think The Last of Us 2 really needs to take from this series is the open world-like design of Jak 2. The leap between Jak and Daxter and Naughty Dog's second installment in the franchise is pretty amazing. It was almost like playing a platform GTA. If The Last of Us 2 can expand on what TLoU gave us in terms of open areas, Naughty Dog should look to Jak 2 in terms of design. Uncharted 4 looks like it has plenty of options available for players in terms of choosing the path they want to take, and I hope that it, or The Last of Us 2 can rival Jak 2 in this regard!
Uncharted is such an unusual franchise. We've seen how it has inspired so many different games, namely Tomb Raider and the soon to be released, Rise of the Tomb Raider. But in terms of inspiring The Last of Us 2, there's nothing I really want to see crossover. Obviously, Naughty Dog's movement away from platformers towards more cinematic adventures is apparent with The Last of Us and Uncharted.
But I've always had difficulty with connecting with the Uncharted series in the same way I did with TLoU. The gun mechancis have never really satisfied me, they need a lot of work. The adventures were a lot of fun, but I was never really that engaged with the characters. Perhaps the Uncharted Collection will change my mind when it releases for PS4, but we'll see. Do you want anything from Uncharted in The Last of Us 2?
What do you want from Naughty Dog now a days? Do you miss their platform adventures? Are you happy with their progression to cinematic games? Let us know where you stand on Uncharted 4 and the idea of The Last of Us 2 in the comments and want you want them to carry from Jak and Daxter and Crash Bandicoot!
