When the first trailer for Jem and the Holograms debuted online earlier this year, it was met with a pretty stiff fan reception: major complaints focused on the lack of Synergy, a computer built by Jerrica's father that helps she and her band transform into their musical alter-egos. Jem is an outrageous fantasy adventure, so the lack of those elements -- along with the band's primary rivals, The Misfits -- had quite a few feathers ruffled.
The second trailer, released online today, aims to fix that. Whether it does so or not is up to the fans, but if [Star Wars: Episode VII — The Force Awakens](tag:711158) can win people over with an adorable robot, maybe this new take on Synergy will, too.
The only real feature that this little robot shows off in the trailer is the ability to project old home movies in order to send messages of confidence to Jerrica from her father. The band's makeup and style seems as though it was done manually by the girls themselves, and no magical transformations occur. Is our new little friend a fan-pleasing gimmick?
In another bit behind the scenes of footage, a single shot can be seen featuring what looks like the leader of The Misfits, green-haired Pizzazz. It seems as though rampant narcissism isn't the only thing the young band will be up against, if Pizzazz's presence indicates anything.
The adaptation is still being widely burned by critics, and in the aftermath of The Fantastic Four's very recent box office bomb (which so many are largely blaming on abundantly cynical reviews), Jem and the Holograms has a tough wall to break.
