My good friend and new Movie Pilot Contributor, Derrick Weston, and I were trying to figure out who had the best fantasy team for MoviePilot's newest contest. While this isn't exactly the point of the contest, we thought it would be interesting to face off against each other and allow YOU to be the judge of who has the better team line up. I'm going to be splicing from both articles, but you can see Derrick's original one here and mine here.

Team Captain: Optimus Prime vs. Charles Xavier

D: No, not the Optimus of the horrid Michael Bay films. The Optimus Prime of the cartoon and comics. He's wise, he's powerful, and he knows how to wrangle difficult personalities (Grimlock?). He'd have the gravitas and respect to lead a group of heroes against just about any imaginable threat. Also, let's not forget that he's overcome the little matter of being dead multiple times. This is who I want leading the charge against unspeakable evil.

Z: Charles Xavier is a mutant who possesses incredible psionic powers, making him one of the world's most powerful telepaths. With the ability to read minds, project his own thoughts into the minds of others, psionically manipulate the minds of others, induce temporary mental and/or physical paralysis, loss of particular memories or even total amnesia, project powerful mental bolts of psionic energy (stunning the mind of another being into unconsciousness), and sense the presence of other superhuman mutants, Professor X is arguably one of the greatest and most powerful leaders in any comic universe.

Not only is he a powerful individual, he is incredibly intelligent, having entered college at age 16 and earning his bachelor's degree in biology within two years, then going onto to earn Master's degrees in genetics and biophysics, a Ph.D. in anthropology, and a M.D. in psychiatry... not to mention having years of study in genetic mutation, creating and leading the X-men. Professor X is a bad-ass. I mean, he'd have to be to get Sir Patrick Stuart to portrait him for years.

Optimus Prime or Professor X?

1st Round Picks: Spider-man vs. Batman

D: A good team needs a guiding ethos and there is none better than "With great power comes great responsibility". Peter Parker would carry the burden of saving the world with his trademark wit and humor. The Secret Wars storyline reminds us that Spidey could work in a team of diverse super heroes. Besides his own considerable superpowers, he'd also have his knowledge of science and technology to bring to the table. Spider-Man is who I want on my team when the world is in peril.

Z: I don't think this one needs much of an explanation, but I'll give you a few facts about Batman that makes him a must-have member of my team. Batman has no inherent superhuman powers; he relies on his own scientific knowledge, detective skills, and athletic prowess. He is repeatedly described as having a genius-level intellect, one of the greatest martial artists in the DC Universe, and having peak human physical conditioning... need I go on?

Round 2 Picks: Magneto vs. Squirrel Girl

D: This one is a bit of a wild card. While Magneto tends to want to subjugate humanity, he steps up when the entirety of the planet is in danger. To be on the safe side, perhaps it would be best to recruit Age of Apocalypse Magneto. In that storyline, Magneto is firmly on the side of the angels, fighting against Apocalypse, and carrying on the dream of his dead friend Charles Xavier. Magneto brings unparalleled power to this fight. Assuming the threat to the universe isn't made completely of plastic, Magneto would turn the tide of any battle.

Z: Surprised, aren't you? Well don't be. Her powers include enhanced strength, speed, agility, and reflexes; small claws and enlarged incisors; retractable knuckle spike; semi-prehensile tail; empathic bond with squirrels, like Monkey Joe and Tippy Toe, can communicate with squirrels... still not convinced she's a real threat? Here's my two biggest arguments for having her on my team:
1.) Squirrel army. If I can only have 4 people on my team, you better know one of those will bring along an army of Sciuridae.
2.) She single-handedly defeated Doctor Doom (overwhelming him with the squirrels under her control). Single-handedly!

3rd Round Pick: Oracle vs. Yoda

D: With all the testosterone on the team, we're gonna need someone to reel the boys in. I debated between Oracle and Storm. While Ororo would bring her amazing abilities to control the weather (along with some diversity!), I felt like we needed a brain behind this operation. The former Batgirl is who I'd want analyzing the danger, offering the guys in the field vital info, and coming up with the winning strategy. She's also not gonna take any shit from these guys. She's stood up to Batman, for crying out loud. She knows how to deal with egos.

Z: Yoda was one of the most renowned and powerful Jedi Masters in galactic history. He was known for his legendary wisdom, mastery of the Force and skills in lightsaber combat. Another no-brainier.

We'll see who comes out on top, buddy. Best of luck.
