American Horror Story Hotel is a strange place for the series to go in Season 5. It seems as if the show has established a pattern in its anthology stories, with each season centering on a particular location or institution where things get spooky. Every setting so far has a perchance for the spooky or at least morbid. Murder House; sure. Asylum; sensationalised but spooky. Coven; fabulous, and spooky. Freakshow; see Asylum. But Hotel? What do hotels really have that's so scary, and what kind of horrifying storylines could this show produce. They were told the breakfast buffet ended at 11 but it actually ended at 10:30 OOOOOOOOOHHHH!
Perhaps Hotel is simply opening up the possibilities for American Horror Story a little more, with a number of new settings and institutions available to creep us out in the future. With the amount of attention American Horror Story Season 5 has been getting, the show could be on to a winning formula! It's worth questioning just what crazy places this show could go after Hotel!
What Comes After American Horror Story: Hotel?
American Horror Story Cemetery: Okay sure. Berate me for picking the most obvious spooky setting possible, though graveyards are such a cliche horror setting, something interesting could surely be done. Just look at the movie Cemetery Man. A story could be told of people who tend a sacred resting place, and keep the undead down under the dirt where they belong!
American Horror Story Monastery: So here's another macabre and old worldly suggestion. American Horror Story has often toyed with notions of the devil, and battles between religious concepts of good and evil, but what if the show took that even further? A monastery setting would provide a set of characters who's lives really were affronted by the presence of evil. The only problem comes with the fact that monastery's are usually a space of gender division, and if there's one thing this show likes, it's mixing things up!
American Horror Story High School: Let's not beat around the bush here. High School settings are bound to ruin a show for one half of the audience, and seal the deal for the other. The reason this setting would work after American Horror Story Hotel is that the show already plays out with a sense of petty teen drama. Think something like Buffy the Vampire Slayer meets Teen Wolf, only more... y'know. Messed up!
American Horror Story Space Station: Stay with me here! American Horror Story has always shown a willingness to get a bit heady with the sci-fi concepts, so you can't say suddenly setting a season on a spooky space station would be too much of a jump! If you haven't seen Alien, you don't get to say you're a fan of horror or sci-fi, and it would be real fun to suddenly see actors like Evan Peters and Sarah Paulson in goofy Star Trek jump suits. This kind of thing would likely be similar to Paul WS Anderson's accidentally brilliant Event Horizon.
American Horror Story Theater: If you've ever been involved in dramatics of any kind, you know that feeling of the first night. Everyone is ready to shine. Tensions are high, sexual or otherwise, and people are just waiting for that explosive feeling of nailing the show. Now imagine that vibe, only with more murder. You've just imagined American Horror Story Theater! This is probably the idea American Horror is most equipped for after Season 5. There's space for plenty of musical numbers, which would be ideal if Ryan Murphy had managed a show entirely about that in the past. That and Lady Gaga being part of the cast makes this perfect!
