Mario Kart 8 has been out on Wii U for a little over a year now. Our office is still obsessed. This is not an exaggeration; aside from weekends there is not a single day that goes by where Mario Kart 8 isn't played in Moviepilot. We absolutely adore everything that Nintendo has managed to accomplish with this game, from its great characters, awesome DLC, down to the recent addition of 200cc!
But is it the greatest Mario Kart game that has ever been released? Super Mario Kart, released in 1992 for the SNES, kickstarted a long and profitable relationship between karting and home consoles. Nintendo have developed this brand to perfection, as they have done with Super Mario Brothers and The Legend of Zelda, to the extent where we really feel that Mario Kart 8 is the greatest installment the franchise has ever seen.
Mario Kart 8 - Is It Your Favorite Nintendo Mario Kart Game?
I thought we could celebrate the legacy of this franchise by acknowledging some of the greatest installments of Mario Kart Nintendo has ever developed. Naturally, if you don't agree and think that another version of Mario Kart is where it's at, please let us know in the comments below! We'd love to hear which Nintendo product you're still happiest with!
Mario Kart 64
What. A. Game. To many people of my generation, this was the game that brought them to the N64. After having gone round to a friend's house and playing Smash Bros. and Mario Kart 64, I was hooked. He was automatically the coolest person I knew and anytime he recommended going back to his place, I had to try so hard to conceal my willingness. The 3D terrain, and some of the most classic courses Nintendo ever designed make this one of the best of an incredible series!
Mario Kart DS
I don't care what anyone says, this was an exceptional game. Mario Kart DS was a god send for traveling on planes. I couldn't wait for us to reach the appropriate altitude just so I could blast around those courses for hours on end! It brought in some pioneering features and still maintained that nostalgic sense of wonder.
Mario Kart Double Dash
This game has the single best collection of original tracks the series has ever seen, from the insanity of Baby Park to DK Mountain's strategic perfection to Mushroom Bridge's rush hour madness. Mario kart 8 comes so close with the likes of Ribbon Road and Toad's Harbour (a personal favorite) but Double Dash did bring in some amazing tracks.
Mario Kart 7
Mario Kart Wii was incredibly disappointing, but it kind of gave Nintendo the chance to see what worked and didn't work. Therefore, they put everything that they learned into Mario Kart 7 and we loved them for it. Mario Kart 8 still beats it in our book, but we adored this installment into this beautiful franchise.
So what about you guys? What's your favorite Mario Kart game to date? Be sure to let us know where you stand in the comments below! GO MARIO KART!
