Gamescom was an enlightening experience for those of us that got to attend the expo in Köln, Germany. So many titles that I've been looking forward to for years were finally playable, and almost all of them revealed an aspect that surprised me. For instance, I didn't anticipate that Guitar Hero Live would be as enjoyable as it really is, or that playing [Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain](tag:2683985) would actually be so emotional.
But then there were other games that surprised me in more negative ways. For instance, I wasn't really impressed with a lot of the design choices in [Star Wars: Battlefront](tag:2684021) and Hitman had an awful presentation. But there was another game that I found to be particularly underwhelming and that was Halo 5. After Gamescom, the Xbox One exclusive that I'm looking forward to the most now is Gears of War 4.
Gamescom Has Made the Release Date of Gears of War 4 Far More Exciting Than That Of Halo 5
At Gamescom we had the opportunity to try out some multiplayer matches with Halo 5 and they were surprisingly underwhelming. Under pressure from the likes of Call Of Duty, 343 Industries and Microsoft have made peculiar and disappointing alterations to the foundations of what makes Halo, Halo! I adore this franchise and I still think that Halo 2 is one of the greatest shooters of all time and a valid reason to own an XBOX. But the changes to the chore mechanics of the franchise with Halo 5 felt too similar to so many other shooters. Microsoft have also made the appalling move of removing local play - a defining feature of the Halo series! Therefore, after playing it at Gamescom, my excitement for Halo 5 has decreased significantly as I look forward to the bright future on Xbox One.
We know very little abut The Coalition's Gears of War 4. They've been cryptic with their gameplay reveals, and information about the game is scant. We're hoping they don't follow Halo 5 and obliterate local play, also one of the defining features of this series. Gears of War is due to receive its ultimate edition release for the Xbox One soon and we can't wait to see what they've done with the original. Rod Fergusson adores the atmosphere of the original game and has stated that he'll have to betray his fans to bring the series back to the horror-roots that he loved. I can't wait to see what he does with Gears of War 4, let's just hope it doesn't instil a similar degree of disappointment that Halo 5 currently is.
Which Release Date Are You More Excited for On Xbox One?
Are you still excited for Halo 5 and do you still have faith in 343 Industries? I have no doubt that Guardians will be a lot of fun to play and they've hopefully given us a really exciting campaign, but my excitement for the game has certainly been diminshed after having had the opportunity to play it. Gears of War 4 looks amazing to me and I can't wait for the announcement of its release date. Let us know where you stand in the comments!
