On August 25th, Until Dawn will receive its release date for the PS4. At the moment, I think the general public are cautiously optimistic about Sony's next horror adventure. Until Dawn brings forth a similar formula to that of Heavy Rain - it's kind of the definition of a Playstation game. We'll venture through the campaign as an array of characters, there will be a lot of QTEs and we have control over the actions of these teenagers and ultimately, their lives.

If someone dies during your first playthrough of Until Dawn, they're gone forever. We'll have to be vigilant of the killer that stalks these people and we seriously hope that this game isn't a failed idea. Horror games can go one of two ways, and I sincerely hope this one isn't awful. In terms of quality, Until Dawn will be facing some tough competition on its release date, so let's take a look at five of the best horror games out there that it needs to beat!

Until Dawn - Can it Top These 5 Terrifying Horror Games?

I'm going to include the 5 horror games that have genuinely freaked me out in the past and are actually good games! I've obviously played all of the games on this list, therefore if you can think of any alternatives to my list and some titles that I haven't played please let us know in the comments!

P.T. AKA, Silent Hills

Hideo Kojima's cryptic advertisement for Silent Hills is a horrifically terrifying affair. It will go down in the annals of video game history as a legend. Konami have attempted to wipe it from the face of the earth (or at least the playstation store), leaving only a few thousand people with a copy of the demo on their PS4 systems.

Thankfully I still have it at home and I genuinely can't play it sometimes due to its intensely terrifying moments. This demo is clever, scary, difficult and extremely well crafted. It stands as a reminder of what Silent Hills could have been and it was a massive loss for the industry that Kojima and Del Toro couldn't collaborate on this remarkable idea.

Dead Space

I adore this series, and I seriously hope that Dead Space 4 is actually happening. The first game in this series had me and my sister terrified as we navigated its halls. You become more familiar with its tricks and jump scares as you play Dead Space 2 and 3, but the first game did a remarkable job of frightening me. Those moments of terror as you desperately attempt to shoot off the limbs of attacking necromorphs are what makes this series such a glorious success.

Alien: Isolation

The unpredictable nature of The Creative Assembly's Alien AI is one of the greatest accomplishments in Video Games in 2014. They did a remarkable job of replicating the atmosphere and visuals of Ridley Scott's masterpiece and the way in which it can scare you is remarkable. Seeing the Alien at the end of a hall is enough to make you panic and dive for cover. It's rare that a horror game can scare you that much and still be well made, but Alien: Isolation manages it!

Siren: Blood Curse

Nightmares. Siren: Blood Curse does a remarkable job of creating moments of sheer terror for you to engage with. There were so many moments in Siren that I just had to drop the control and say "Fuck that!" The best kind of horror game is one that makes you fear continuing, and Siren: Blood Curse excels when it comes to making you afraid.

Honourable Mentions

I genuinely found it quite difficult to stick to 5, so I'm going to round of with some brilliant games that you need to try if you love horror! Alan Wake (the screams out of my sister were ridiculous), Outlast, Slender: The Eight Pages (save me), System Shock 2, F.E.A.R. and Condemned.

Until Dawn
Until Dawn

Until Dawn is up against some amazing competition, and I hope that it can be put on a lot of gamers top ten lists for horror games. SuperMassive games have never made anything of particular note and we seriously hope that they don't mess up the way that Ready At Dawn did with [The Order: 1886](tag:2707754).

Have you any other horror games you want to mention? Are you looking forward to the release date of Until Dawn on the PS4? Then let us know in the comments below!
