Straight Outta Compton, based on a true story behind N.W.A and their rise in gangsta rap and west coast hip hop, has instantly become notorious (and that’s because it was just released today and already has an 85% on Rotten Tomatoes)!

N.W.A, which is an abbreviation for N----z Wit Attitude, endured controversy over their explicit lyrics that many viewed distasteful against women, crime, and expressed their hatred of the police system; but according to the members, they rapped about nothing but the truth, especially when they came…..

(wait for it…)

The movie focuses on three men who would later become famously known as Eazy-E, Ice Cube, and Dr. Dre, along with members MC Ren and DJ Yella, and the story of the group’s early recording sessions and initial rise to fame. With great back stories to how songs such as “Gangsta, Gangsta” and “F--- tha Police” were written, It is amazing to see just how much N.W.A’s music had affected the world around them and brought rise to major issues, such as police brutality and the amount of street crime that was committed.

Though the movie heavily focused on Ice Cube’s dissatisfaction behind contracts and people constantly questioning his motives, there is a significant amount of funny moments that occur, such as references towards the movie “Friday” where Ice Cube is caught messing around with the script to the disses shared between the members of the group after the group had separated to do solo projects.

With great, but minor moments that has Dr. Dre introducing artists like Snoop Dogg and Tupac Shakur, this movie delivers great pieces of rap history that includes how Dr. Dre came up with his label, Aftermath, and the untimely death of fellow member, Eazy- E.

In short, this movie is definitely a must-see and will not disappoint.
Overall rating: 4.7/5

On a side note., Ice Cube definitely has not changed when it comes to his attitude and his own son was highly exceptional in portraying a younger version of his own father. So uncanny!
