With the march to the release of [Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice](tag:711870) now fully underway, rumours are flying about who the villain might be. Lex Luthor, naturally, is taking centre stage in the bad guy parade, but with Batman vs Superman's official synopsis alluding to some bigger, badder, villain, most fans are sure that Doomsday will crash onto the scene!

Fearing the actions of a god-like super hero left unchecked, Gotham City’s own formidable, forceful vigilante takes on Metropolis’s most revered, modern-day savior, while the world wrestles with what sort of hero it really needs. And with Batman and Superman at war with one another, a new threat quickly arises, putting mankind in greater danger than it’s ever known before.

Of course, the "new threat" might refer to Lex but is he really the greatest danger to mankind? While the battle between Batman and Superman is taking the spotlight in all the film's marketing so far, it's likely that Batman vs Superman director Zack Snyder is distracting us from finding out what this "new threat" is. So what is the case for Doomsday? And why would Lex want to create such a powerful monster?

Humanity's Greatest Threat

Powerful new foe for Superman and Batman!
Powerful new foe for Superman and Batman!

Just in case you missed it, here's a breakdown of the Doomsday theory. In the comics, Doomsday is a genetically engineered creature bent on ultimate destruction. Incredibly powerful, it actually kills Superman in the Death Of Superman comic. With the DC Cinematic Universe headed squarely towards their team up movie Justice League Part One, it's unlikely we'll see this part of the comic story in Batman v Superman.

(Or in this case, Lex's laboratory!) Deviations from the comics world are pretty much a given for Doomsday, as the current theory says that Lex Luthor will create Doomsday from Zod's corpse, which we know he has in his possession. The theory states that while experimenting on Zod's corpse, Lex will activate the Doomsday genome, intentionally or otherwise, triggering the horrific beast to arise.

What the theory doesn't tell us is why he would do this, and what he hopes to gain from unleashing Doomsday.

World Domination or Just A Distraction?

What is Lex Luthor planning?
What is Lex Luthor planning?

Let's break down the reasons why Lex might want to create his very own killing machine...

  • World Domination: with Doomsday on his side, Lex could do pretty much anything he wanted, and slay anyone who stands in his way. But from the trailer, this doesn't really seem like Lex's style - he's all about manipulation, social and political, and appearing like a man of the people. Massacring those people would really be a step back for him.
  • Slaying Superman: we know that this is on Lex's mind, as he also has a nice chunk of kryptonite stashed away for a rainy day. But if he's going to sick Doomsday on Supes, why bother instigating a fight between him and Batman?
  • Accidental Creation: it could be that Lex was experimenting on Zod's corpse to try and discover Superman's weaknesses, and the activation of the Doomsday genome was a complete accident. As Superman once teamed up with Lex to defeat Doomsday in the comics, it's possible we might see Lex go to Superman for help after he creates his own Frankestein's monster... but very unlikely considering this is Lex's first introduction to the canon.

The major flaw in Lex's plan, whatever it is, is that Doomsday may prove just too powerful to control. Unless he has another superpowered being on his side...

Double Agent Wonder Woman

Diana Prince battles Doomsday?
Diana Prince battles Doomsday?

The hottest rumour right now is that while Batman and Superman bicker, Wonder Woman will be the one to take Doomsday out. Another rumour is that she is actually working for Lex, given that she's been seen hanging around the LexCorp offices. But what if both are true?

Diana Prince could be working undercover at LexCorp, secretly investigating Lex while ingratiating herself to him. She might let slip that she has superpowers so he will trust her, and include her as an ally in his plans. For Lex, she could be a safety net to Doomsday, ready to tame the beast once he's slain Superman. But at the last minute, Wonder Woman could show her true colours and turn on Lex, killing Doomsday and ruining his plans.

Until Batman v Superman is realeased, all we have is speculation, but this possibility does solve the problem of Doomsday being just too powerful for Lex to use as a tool. And it means that whatever happens, we know a superhero will save the day!

But what do you think: will Lex create Doomsday? And what is his plan? Let us know in the comments, or write your own post!
