Has there ever been a character in a movie more unintentionally hated and maligned than Jar Jar Binks?

Trick question: the answer is no. No, there has not been.

And today, at D23 during the Disney Legends Award presentation, George Lucas finally gave us the one to blame for it all: Goofy.

Yes, as in Disney's Goofy.

Speaking about how much Disney has meant to him over the course of his life, the director/producer revealed that it was the iconic character of Goofy that was the inspiration behind Jar Jar:

Disney has been part of my life for 60 years. I was there the second day Disneyland was open. A lot of what I do came out of the films and the joy I’ve had at the park. In fact, here’s something no one knows... Goofy was the inspiration for Jar Jar Binks... I love Goofy and I love Jar Jar.

While it's true that some people don't hate Jar Jar Binks quite as passionately as the majority of fans, it's interesting that George Lucas chose to bring him up. Unfortunately, he didn't have much more to say about the upcoming [Star Wars: Episode VII — The Force Awakens](tag:711158), but we can expect to get much more info tomorrow during Disney's live action panel at D23.
