Team Captain – Gandalf (The Hobbit and LOTR Trilogies)
Having the ability to bring out the best in others and assemble both the Company of Thorin and the Fellowship of the Ring, who would fight against terrific odds and triumph. Forming and leading teams of different abilities and ideals toward a common goal is kind of Gandalf’s forte (As well as having terrific power!)
Being regarded as the wisest of Istari order, Gandalf was sent to Middle Earth to counsel the various groups to come together against the greatest of evils. He also leads by example – when faced with the Balrog he tells his fellows to 'fly' and takes on the beast - for all his rhetoric, he also leads by example. No matter what the threat, Gandalf will ensure that they 'SHALL NOT PASS!'
(However, the next three will make that task a lot easier…!)
1st round pick – John Rambo (First Blood, First Blood: part II, Rambo III and Rambo)
In the immortal words of Colonel Trautman, ‘he’s a man who's the best, with guns, with knives, with his bare hands. A man who's been trained to ignore pain, ignore weather, to live off the land, to eat things that would make a billy goat puke. In Vietnam his job was to dispose of enemy personnel. To kill! Period! Win by attrition. Well Rambo was the best.’
Able to operate both as a member of an elite group, with experience of guerilla conflict, as well as being a one man army (with an unreal kill count!) – any threat coming to our world, I’d want Johnny front and center! He’s a man with a ‘code’, loyalty and unbelievable fighting skills and more than one screw lose. Remember - what you call hell, he calls home.
2nd round pick – V (V for Vendetta graphic novel/film)
Never one to stand for oppression of any kind, V offers an incredible host of skills and abilities. He is an expert with explosives and at computer hacking, as well as being a master of subterfuge. This skill set coupled with a vast literary, cultural and philosophical intellect would undoubtedly come in handy in addressing an intergalactic threat. V also has advanced strength, reflexes, endurance and pain tolerance. I’m sure some people will want to pick up on him being ‘dead’ but remember ‘Beneath this mask there is more than flesh. Beneath this mask there is an idea, … and ideas are bulletproof.’
3rd round pick – Batman (Frank Miller’s Dark Knight Returns/Strikes Again)
Although he often seen as the ultimate loner, people often forget that the Dark Knight has assembled, trained and led the Bat family for many years.
This conception of the Batman, as aged vigilante shows all of his greatest qualities and everything we would need to win the battle. He has an inner steel to never accept injustice or give up even when all others seem ready too. He is the ultimate strategist, to the point of being able to defeat Superman and has so many gadgets, the Bat mobile/tank and years of experience in combat. Bats is the second in command (V. close to being captain in fact) and he also has assembled his own ‘Batboys’, which could also prove useful allies in the battle!
Men of honour, men of action. This fantasy team are the heroes we both deserve and need.
