If there's one thing about [Star Wars: Episode VII — The Force Awakens](tag:711158) that's worth getting excited about, it's the new villain, Kylo Ren.
From his very first shot where he unsheathed his crossguard lightsaber, he inspired a fear that hadn't been felt since Darth Vader made his first appearance. And because of the climatic battle at the end of Return of the Jedi, it looks like Ren is a lone Sith for the time being. But what else do we know about this villain? Where is he from? Is Kylo Ren his real name? Look no further than here for answers. Here's everything we know on Kylo Ren.
It's a DIY Lightsaber
Yes, it's true. Just as we suspected, his infamous crossguard was home-made. Which is a small confirmation that Kylo Ren is the last Sith. But what if his lightsaber is more of a right of passage? When speaking to EW, director J.J. Abrams stated that Kylo is affiliated with a group called the Knights of Ren (more on the name later). Let's assume the Knights of Ren are like the last remaining order of Sith Lords. What if creating his own lightsaber was a way he had to prove himself as one of them?
Don't believe me? Well, think about this. Didn't Luke have to make his own lightsaber before he became a true Jedi? Sure, you could say he had to because he lost the old one. But if you dare to look at the prequels, Anakin had to do the same thing. So, is Kylo Ren's lightsaber really a monument to his power?
He's Got An Obsession with the Skywalkers
If you think about it, Kylo Ren could essentially be a crazy fan of the Skywalkers, like the rest of us. I mean look at the facts. A) He's got the melted remains of Darth Vader's helmet, for whatever reasons. B) Isn't it obvious that his mask looks really similar to Vader's?
So why is he so obsessed with the Skywalkers? Well, for one they're the most powerful Force-sensitives in the entire galaxy. He might be trying to understand what makes them so powerful so he can replicate it somehow.
But what if his obsession is more personal than that? What if, in fact, he shares that same power? What if he is a Skywalker?!
Kylo Ren isn't his Real Name!
You remember earlier when I said he became part of the Knights of Ren? You may be wondering why the similar names, but according to Abrams, Kylo Ren isn't the villain's real name. In fact, it's a name that he came by when he joined the group. Perhaps, like how Darth is a name used if you're a Sith Lord, Ren is the name given to the Knights. But if that's the case, then what is his real name?
Like I said before, it makes perfect since that he could truly be a Skywalker. It explains his obsession with Vader. Sure, that makes it a "history repeated" situation, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. It shows that when people are given that much power, it's not always going to make them good people. Sometimes power like that can turn someone into a villain.
Well, that's everything I figured you ought to know about Kylo Ren, with a few theories here and there. It looks like Ren could be the Darth Vader of our generation, and I'm excited to see him in action December 18th.
