Now, I am a young filmmaker who has always adored the Western genre but I have always felt not many directors have done it justice when it comes to films. Obviously, you have Tarantino's Django and his newest The Hateful Eight (coming this Christmas) which are both (predicting for Hateful Eight) an absolutely stunning take on the genre, both modernising and broadening the genre to a new audience... However, I have never seen a modern western quite like Slow West.
1. IT HAS MICHAEL FASSBENDER
Now, for those of you who do not follow me on twitter (@JadaBrevett) you will probably not know that I adore Michael Fassbender. I have seen him in Steve McQueen's Shame, 12 Years A Slave and Hunger. Prometheus as David 8 and as Magneto in the X-Men films which are probably what most people know him from.
I don't know what it is about him in this film... but he just seems to play the perfect bounty hunter and just has the overall perfect look. This is one of my favourite roles from him by far.
2. THE CINEMATOGRAPHY IS DIVINE
The cinematography in this film is just exquisite and beautiful. I was stunned to find out it was actually filmed in New Zealand and for some scenes in Scotland.
3. THE SOUNDTRACK
The soundtrack is so beautiful yet humorous at the same time, delivering a certain air to the film. I believe that the soundtrack added to the films success to me personally. There is a motif that is played throughout which is particularly catchy and I found that the character's themes are extremely fitting to them. TAKE A LISTEN!
4. JOHN MACLEAN - THE DIRECTOR
The minute I finished this film I immediately switched it off and looked up the director. This film to me had the quirky-ness of Wes Anderson and the action and dark comedy of a Tarantino film which to me is a perfect blend. I cannot wait to see what feature film will be Maclean's next.
5. THE STORYLINE
If the storyline isn't captivating with many other elements... for me I can't watch it. Slow West is a bitter-sweet tragedy with many comedic moments. You grow attached to the characters incredibly quickly and join them on their journey.
Honestly, I could write 1,000,000 words on why this is such a great film so I guarantee you give it a watch!
