When it comes to movies, there is an unwritten rule that the original is almost always the best. The key word there is almost. Sometimes a sequel comes out that is simply better than the film that came before it. It’s not common but it happens.

Sometimes they tell the next part of the story and sometimes they just tell a much better story. Sometimes the characters make amazing developments and sometimes they introduce completely new characters. Here is a list of five sequels that are more epic, hilarious or just generally more awesome than the originals:

1. The Empire Strikes Back

I’ll start with the most obvious. Empire is widely recognized as not only the best Star Wars movie, but one of the best movies of all time. The iconic “I am you father” line was delivered near the end of this film and the industry was rocked. To this day, children that have never seen the movie know that line and know who Darth Vader is. A New Hope was a great movie, but Empire definitely topped it.

2. Ace Ventura 2: When Nature Calls

This one is more of a personal preference. Both Ace Ventura movies are hilarious, and two of my all time favorite comedies. When Nature Calls just took it to the next level in my opinion. This was the peak of Jim Carrey’s career and it was awesome. I can’t watch this movie without quoting every other line. Shikaka!

3. Terminator 2: Judgement Day

This is another one that is widely recognized as one of the best sequels ever. Almost all of those iconic lines that you know from Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Terminator come from this movie. On top of that, the T-1000 is one of the greatest villains of all time and one of the most terrifying things ever thought up. You see him coming and it’s hasta la vista, baby.

4. Captain America: The Winter Soldier

Not only did I like this one more than the first Captain America film, but I put it ahead of any other movie in the MCU. Not only did we get an awesome new character in the Falcon, but we also got an amazing villain in the surprise (kind of) return of Bucky Barnes a.k.a. the Winter Soldier. The action is intense, the story is intriguing and the impact it had on the MCU huge.

5. The Dark Knight

I’ll finish up the list with another movie that just about everyone will agree with. The Dark Knight is widely recognized as the best superhero movie ever made. Heath Ledger’s Joker will go down as one of the greatest villains ever and the dark and gritty style of director Christopher Nolan has become incredibly popular thanks to this film. Batman Begins is where it all started, but The Dark Knight took the franchise to a new level that other superhero movies have been trying to reach ever since.
