Marvel movies have been growing at rapid pace in the past couple of years. Ever since Iron Man was first released in 2008, the studio's movies have generally been well received and above and beyond expectations at the box office. Having now completed phase 2, however, one thing about the marvel brand has become stagnant and repetitive:
The movie posters.
Each of these posters share several of the same characteristics, including but not limited to:
- The female lead in the arms of the hero (Thor: the Dark World, Iron Man 3)
- Faded view of villain in the background (Iron Man 3, Thor: the Dark World, Captain America: the Winter Soldier)
- Some sort of plane flying around in the background, typically on fire (Iron Man 3, Captain America: the Winter Soldier, Thor: the Dark World, Marvel's the Avengers, Avengers: Age of Ultron)
It becomes impossible to ignore these similarities when you place the posters side by side. In the pictures above, you can see the Thor: the Dark World and Iron Man 3 posters share several of these characteristics. The Marvel's the Avengers, Avengers: Age of Ultron and Guardians of the Galaxy covers look very similar, too.
What they Can Learn from Lego
Recently, lego released the cover art to the upcoming Lego Marvel Avengers video game, set to be released this winter. On it, the cover (shown above) depicts the Avengers fighting against a combination of Chitauri soldiers and Ultron androids. Now what makes this cover great (and different from all of the preceding marvel movie posters) is that it shows the Avengers doing something. Its exciting, its different, its interesting, and depicts the Avengers doing what first drew most people to them in 2012: fighting alongside one another.
Now this isn't the only way they can improve the movie posters. Marvel has released several other promotional posters across their movies--like the ones shown below from Captain America: the Winter Soldier and Thor. What makes these covers interesting is the fact that they are different. We haven't seen these posters before in a Marvel film.
Hopefully we will start to see some different things with the upcoming movie Captain America: Civil War.
