Not long ago, Tim Ensor had a dream. Not a figurative dream, a literal dream. It was about going into a comic book store that also had a bar attached. Tim hooked up with friends Lawson Wright and Dave DeFeo, and they all made this dream a reality.
My Parents' Basement is a brand new establishment in Avondale Estates, Georgia (a town right on the edge of Atlanta). They just opened last Wednesday (August 12, 2015 - I specified because I know people will be reading this for years and years to come), and according to Tim, they've been SLAMMED.
Apparently, a place that combines the primary themes of beer and comic books is exactly what the world has been waiting for. Tim says "nerd bars" are a growing trend, but My Parents' Basement is the only one of it's kind in Avondale Estates, and in nearby Decatur. There is an arcade bar in Atlanta's Old Fourth Ward neighborhood called Joystick, but aside from the Geek Easy pub attached to "A Comic Shop" in Orlando, Florida, these are the only nerd bars in the Southeast, and business is GOOD.
In addition to beers, My Parents' Basement has a large assortment of Comic Books in the shop side of things, as displayed in the above photo, and in the one below.
They also have a gorgeous outdoor covered patio, which is my personal favorite type of dining, made possible nearly year-round by Atlanta's temperate weather.
My Parents' Basement is a family-friendly establishment, and has even started a bank of arcade video games to keep the kids occupied while the grown-ups drink beer and talk about comics. Tim, Lawson, and Dave will not be able to attend this year's Dragon Con, coming up September 4-7, since they are entirely too busy, but they will be open for after (and during) parties!
