Recently, the forever beautiful and perky Jennifer Love Hewitt posted to her Twitter that she would love a sequel to her 1998 film CAN'T HARDLY WAIT. I, for one, would LOVE (pun totally intended) to see this happen! It is one of my favorite teen comedies, and one that will always hold a special place in my heart.
Now, if you clicked on this article, you are no doubt also a fan of this cult classic. But just in case, here is a quick synopsis: It is Graduation Day for Preston Meyers (Ethan Embry) and his best friend Denise Fleming (Lauren Ambrose). Preston has been in love with the class beauty Amanda Beckett (Jennifer Love Hewitt) for all of High School and finds out that she and Mike Dexter (Peter Facinelli), the class stud, have broken up. He decides to go to the final party of their High School lives and profess his love for Amanda!
CLASS OF '98!
CAN'T HARDLY WAIT was released on June 12th, 1998. My High School Graduation was held on June 11th, 1998. Needless to say I, along with my fellow Graduates, were really looking forward to seeing this movie. We wanted to see if it would mirror our own experience that we would have just the evening prior. A movie about a group graduating from High School at the same time that we were?! Is that the definition of fate?! We thought so!
Twenty Year Reunion is Coming Up!
As I said, this movie was released in 1998. Set it up as a twenty year High School reunion movie and that gives all involved three years to come up with the perfect sequel that will satisfy fans of the original, as well as bring in new fans! There is definitely another story to be told about where you are in your thirties. A story to be told about what happens twenty years after you graduate.
CAN'T HARDLY WAIT is a film that speaks to not only those who graduated the year of its release, but to all of those who graduated after. It has some dated references, of course. But the main story is one that still stands the test of time. It's a story about growing up, about love, about looking forward. It's a film about first loves and heartbreak. A film about friendship and new beginnings. And most of all, it's a film about fate. Jennifer Love Hewett was fated to attend the screening that made her nostalgic about her experience making this film. She was to fated to write this tweet and get the rest of us nostalgic about our experiences with this film. A reunion movie is fated to happen. "WHICH TEAM HAS THE WINNING PLAY! HUNTINGTON!, HUNTINGTON!, HEY, HEY, HEY!!!"
