Star Wars, the most beloved movie franchise in the galaxy. Fans we're disappointed and the Mickey Mouse- Darth Vader memes began to spread back on October 30th, 2012 when Disney bought Lucasfilm for $4.05 billion dollars! It looks like those people, including myself, we're hypocrites because so far, it looks like everything Disney has done with Star Wars (and Marvel) under their wing have been doing looks great. In the next couple years, we are getting another six Star Wars movies! Yes, J.J Abrams, Rian Johnson, and Colin Trevorrow will be taking on the sequel trilogy and expanding the universe after Return of the Jedi with returning characters like Luke Skywalker, Princess (Queen) Leia, Han Solo, Chewbacca, R2-D2, C-3PO, and more! The new trilogy will be three movies, so what about the other three? They are not necessarily a trilogy, they are more individual films that take place in the Star Wars universe taking a closer look on events, characters, places, etc. They are called the anthology films or 'A Star Wars Story'. They take place in between the three films.
We just found out that we're even having anthology films pretty recently, so we don't know much about them. The first one we know a little bit about however we only know the director, the plot, and release date for the second one. That looks amazing considering we know nothing about the third one besides we know that they're actually making one. So, let's get down the facts and the rumors and let the speculating begin!
The first anthology film that we know some official things to talk about. The film will be coming out in December 2016 and be directed by Gareth Edwards, who directed the 2014 version of Godzilla. The screenwriters are Gary Whitta & Chris Weitz and Kathleen Kennedy will be producing. They showed a teaser trailer back at Celebration that pretty much showed the Death Star. This team of rebels will be trying to steel the Death Star plans. The cast from left to right in the image above you'll see: Riz Ahmed, Diego Luna, Felicity Jones, Jiang Wen and Donnie Yen. That is a stellar cast. We know Felicity Jones, but I like when Star Wars films have actors we don't know well but are talented because it makes the movie feel real. Hey, I was introduced to Liam Neason, Natalie Portman, and Samuel L. Jackson from Star Wars, so it counts, considering I was younger when they came out. This movie will be set before the events of A New Hope, which makes sense. The end of this movie will meet up with the beginning of A New Hope when Leia and R2-D2 have the plans. The movie is being filmed in the U.K. and John Williams will not being composing for the first time for a Star Wars film. He's getting old and he would have to go eventually. Personally, I think Danny Elfman could be great composing Star Wars music. Again, that picture above is the best thing we've got from Rouge One, so there has been some very interesting casting theories such as,
Diego does look a lot like Biggs, and it would be interesting to shine on the character. Also, personally, Riz does look a lot like Kanan. He has the ponytail and is on a Rebels team. We don't know how the Rebels team turns out but Kanan could totally do this. The original plan and/or rumor was that this was a bounty hunter movie led by Boba Fett and retrieving the Death Star plans. There is no confirmation that the bounty hunter squad is not in the movie, though. Darth Vader is most likely in this movie, considering the story plus his breathing in the teaser trailer. Again, the movie will end at the beginning of A New Hope. Who's in that scene... Darth Vader. He could send out the bounty hunters to destroy this crew we see. Another question is who puts together this team, it could be Kanan putting together this secret mission with pilots from the rebellion and skilled people from across the galaxy. They can't all be pilots because Jiang Wen does not look like a pilot. We will find a lot more about this movie in 2016 because as of now the movie is more than a year away.
Untitled Han Solo Film
This second film had a lot of mix up of what it is but now we know that it will come out a year after Episode VIII in 2018. We know the directors are one my favorites: Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, if you don't know directed The Lego Movie, 21 and 22 Jump Street, and Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs. The confusing part is that they are also directing the Flash, The Lego Movie 2, and an animated Spider-Man film that all come out in 2018. These are some big franchises, they can't direct all big films. Hopefully they stick here because Han Solo is a comic relief in Star Wars, so his own movie will be like a Marvel movie, a comedic tone. It's almost like Guardians of the Galaxy! Speaking of that, Chris Pratt is rumored to play young Han. I don't think so since he already plays Star-Lord and looks no where close to Harrison Ford. Chris Pratt is already in three big franchises and he doesn't need this one, especially one so close to one of his roles. He's also too old because according to Kennedy, who is producing all the new Star Wars films, she says
He’ll definitely be probably in the high teens, low 20s, we’re not introducing you to a 10-year-old Han Solo.
Well, thats a good sign. There was supposed to be a Boba Fett film directed by Josh Trank, who directed the Fantastic Flop, the project was dropped, along with the director. I don't want a whole film on Boba because that reveals a cool mystery but since this film is showing how Han Solo came to be that guy we met in the cantina, and we know that him and Fett have some history together, I believe that Boba Fett will at least appear in this movie. We can also have Jabba the Hutt and Lando Calrissian. Han could be getting chased by Boba Fett because Jabba hired him to get him because he owes money, like he did in A New Hope. Han can buy the Falcon from Lando and they can go on a space adventure! Boba Fett will be being a bad ass in his Slave I. Also, Han Solo will probably find Chewbacca, and it will be a beginning of a friendship.
Unknown Third Film
Now this will be all ideas and speculations. There are rumors that it's about Obi-Wan, but that's boring. I don't want one and truthfully, what would it be about? Him on Tatooine hiding out? I don't want that and we will probably see all that in Rebels. I'm going to say something no one else has even thought of, because no one wants to look back before the Clone Wars because of the prequels. I'm thinking a movie called, Palpatine. This can be set before the Phantom Menace up until the negotiations in the beginning of the Phantom Menace. This will show how Palpatine, one of my favorite characters, is a senator and some-how gets corrupted and becomes the Emperor. Will he pick up an old sith group or will that be destroyed, because Old Republic is not canon but we know there we're Jedi and Sith before Episode I, and Palpatine creates the Empire. He builds the Droid Army. You see the Jedi Council and you also meet young Darth Maul, that is a popular request. There is so many possibilities for a Palpatine movie, I just want one, badly.
Star Wars: Rogue One will be released on December 16, 2016.
Untitled Han Solo Film will be released on May 25, 2018.
