If there's something Disney can do well, it's make the perfect balance between light and dark. Matched with a sunny and bright lead character, we often get a rather dark and twisted villain and mixed together they make the perfect recipe for a great film
Artist Joe Alexander has taken these bright lead characters, in particular the Disney Princesses (and a few non-Princesses), and created a minimalist artwork of the characters with their villains looming ominously in the background. The shadowy villains range from looking quite creepy to dangerous, and there's even one or two who bear a vague resemblance to the Princess themselves.
Check out Joe Alexander's Shadow Collection below and tell me in the comments which ones you like best:
Ariel and Ursula
I love that the ripples of Ariel's hair are echoed with Ursula's tentacles. She certainly looks like a force to be reckoned with behind this little mermaid.
Cinderella and Lady Tremaine
Is it just me or does it actually look like Lady Tremaine's shadow looks a lot like Cinderella? Kinda spooky, really.
Sleeping Beauty and Maleficent
There's something unnerving about seeing cute Sleeping Beauty standing in front of the horned Maleficent.
Belle and Gaston
The shadow of brawny Gaston looks extremely foreboding over the small figure of Belle, especially with those flexed muscles.
Snow White and the Evil Queen
While both Snow White and the Evil Queen have similar looking high collars, there's no doubt that the Evil Queen with her huge cape towers over Snow in a rather menacing way.
Alice and the Queen of Hearts
She may not be an official Disney Princess, but the shadow of the Queen of Hearts over little Alice still makes for an awesome image.
Jasmine and Jafar
Jafar certainly looks creepy looming behind sweet Jasmine. Did you know Jasmine was the only Disney Princess to kiss her villain?! Eek.
Merida and Mor'du
The evil demon bear Mor'du looks quite terrifying behind Merida, luckily we know this Princess is a sharpshooter with an arrow, so I guess she has little to fear.
Tinkerbell and Captain Hook
Like Alice, Tink may not be an official Princess but she does make an appearance in Joe Alexander's series. The big figure of Captain Hook with his scary looking hand stands in stark contrast to the tiny blonde fairy.
Tiana and Doctor Facilier
Well, he's also known as the Shadow Man, so I guess it's only appropriate to include the evil witch-doctor, Dr. Facilier behind New Orleans' best baker, Princess Tiana.
Elsa and Hans
Watch out Elsa, the evil Hans is right behind you!
Rapunzel and Mother Gothel
I personally believe the villain in Tangled is one of the worst of them all. Mother Gothel took a baby Rapunzel and trapped her for years alone inside a tall tower. All the while Rapunzel believed Gothel loved her, but she was merely keeping her for the magical powers of her hair, so evil.
