Just about everyone who watched this past Spring's Daredevil series on Netflix was pleasantly surprised (more like BLOWN AWAY) by how well the character was handled. Daredevil has now set a standard of expectation from Marvel/Netflix collaborated efforts.
To no one's surprise, the success of Daredevil and those expectations that the show set, have piqued the interest in this Fall's Jessica Jones show starring Krysten Ritter, David Tennant, and Mike Coulter.
The cast is enough to spark excitement (especially for me to see David Tennant who I loved as the 10th Doctor in Doctor Who).
But as the release (still unconfirmed) nears closer and little details are released for Jessica Jones, fans on reddit are doing a bit of extra digging to scrounge up what they can about the show.
Well now one reddit user by the name of "UnbreakablJimmySmits" has discoverd a plethora of great information regarding the show. He took the link to the show's Netflix page and raised the ending code of the hyperlink by one and discovered all of the titles for all 13 episodes for the new show. The links have since been removed as they now just send you to a list of shows you "may like" but nothing ever escapes the internet does it?
I have a list of all 13 (supposed) episode titles. It should be noted that these titles may contain spoilers (whether major or minor, I don't know). Here's the compiled list of 13 Jessica Jones episode titles:
- 1x01 - AKA Ladies Night
- 1x02 - AKA Crush Syndrome
- 1x03 - AKA It's Called Whiskey
- 1x04 - AKA 99 Friends
- 1x05 - AKA The Sandwich Saved Me
- 1x06 - AKA You're a Winner
- 1x07 - AKA Top Shelf Perverts
- 1x08 - AKA WWJD?
- 1x09 - AKA Sin Bin
- 1x10 - AKA The Kumbaya Circle Jerk
- 1x11 - AKA I've Got the Blues
- 1x12 - AKA Jewel and the Power Man
- 1x13 - AKA Smile
Now, after looking at some of the titles, I do have a lot of questions but I think I've got some things figured out (maybe/maybe not).
The Purple Man's Despicable Act
Looking at episode 7's title, "Top Shelf Perverts", makes me wonder if this will be where we see Purple Man use his powers to take advantage of Jessica Jones whether it be in the present or in a flashback, since he's done it before in the comics.
Personally, I hope that they handle this aspect with delicacy. I am not one to watch any show or film with an abundance of sexuality or nudity and I believe there's a way to get the point across without being explicit (look at Taken for example).
Now, looking at 8 (AKA WWJD?), 9 (AKA The Sin Bin), 10 (AKA The Kumbaya Circle Jerk) they all have some sort of religious context to them. For instance, WWJD typically stands for "What Would Jesus Do?" and I'm sure in the context of the show, it's a play on the acronym and probably stands for "What Would Jessica Do?". Either way, the religious undertone seems to be present in some capacity. The same was true for Daredevil. We saw Daredevil try and figure out where the line between "just enough" and "too far" is so as not to cross it, largely due to his Catholicism. Even the priest in the show was a voice of reason to Matt Murdock.
Could we be seeing similarities in Jessica Drew? Could we see Peter McRobbie return to the role of Father Lantom? These Netflix shows due take place in Hell's Kitchen so it wouldn't be that much of a surprise if the man showed up? What will the differences be though? I imagine Jessica will have a much harder time with faith or not have a belief at all largely due to the terrible experiences she's gone through that would make her question the reality of God. As a Christian, I tend to be drawn towards characters like Daredevil but not everyone in the world believes what I believe and I accept that. This will also be interesting for when Jessica and Daredevil meet up and team up because how would their differences cope with each other. Now this is all speculation and hypothesizing so I could be way off base here.
The last thing that I want to look at is the 12th episode, "AKA Jewel and the Power Man". That last episode of Daredevil was actually titled "Daredevil" and as we all know, that's when we saw Matt Murdock fully realized as the red, horn-headed superhero of Hell's Kitchen. With the name Jewel and Power Man being mentioned, we know that that is an obvious reference to the alter egos of Jessica Jones and Luke Cage.
Will we see Jessica Jones becoming Jewel after having the events of the show? Will she take flight by the end? Will she don a costume? What about Power Man or Luke Cage? Are we going to see him in a fair amount of action as well? Only time will tell, but the title of episode 12 has me excited that these superheroes will breach out of the darkness for enough time to see the light as well as the last episode, titled "Smile" (does JJ find out she's pregnant by the end of the show?).
Obviously, there's a lot that we don't know yet, we don't have a release date, we don't have a trailer, we have barely anything. But I'm glad that the title leak proved to be somewhat fruitful and I cannot wait to binge watch this show like I did with Daredevil. It'll be interesting to see what themes, events, or characters (besides just Rosario Dawson's) shows up in this series as well as to how it builds to next year's Luke Cage.
But what do you guys think? Are you all excited for Jessica Jones? Do you think Krysten Ritter has what it takes to pull of the titular character? Do you think David Tennant's Purple Man will be just as menacing and dispicable as he was in the comics? In what way do you think this show will tie into Daredevil and future shows?
