The time of summer blockbusters may be coming to a close, but there's still plenty of potential cinematic greatness to look forward to in the upcoming months. One of which is Ridley Scott's (Alien, Gladiator) latest work, The Martian.
Based on Andy Weir's science fiction novel, the highly anticipated film follows astronaut Mark Watney (Matt Damon) who becomes stranded on Mars, and is now forced to survive in one of most volatile and inhospitable environments in the universe. Today, 20th Century Fox released a new trailer for the film and it has me even more excited to venture out into the unknown than ever before.
Set to Jimi Hendrix's "All Along the Watchtower," the trailer really makes you wonder if there's some kind of way out of there for Matt Damon. Check out the latest trailer for The Martian below:
In the two minutes and forty seconds of awesomeness that was this trailer there's a lot to look at. So, let's break this thing down quickly and take a second to really see all it has to offer:
Welcome to Mars
It all looks so calm from afar, but once the camera reaches the surface it's completely chaotic.
Meet the team
The rest of the team behind the manned mission to Mars includes: Jessica Chastain, Kate Mara, Sebastian Stan, Michael Peña, and more.
No man's land
Well, except for one man: Mark Watney.
"This will come as quite a shock to my crew mates, and to NASA, and to the entire world, but I'm still alive."
It's pretty unsettling to see that single spacesuit hanging up.
A view from the top
I think it's safe to say that at the very least, this movie will be some serious eye candy. Look at that gorgeous shot!
"I gotta make water and grow food on a planet where nothing grows."
And I thought my problems were rough.
Contact with NASA
We also know that this movie will have multiple intersecting storylines. We'll be following Watney trying to survive, and his team trying to reach him. Imagine watching Castaway but we also get to see Helen Hunt's search for Tom Hanks. Exciting!
"I'm gonna have to science the shit out of this."
This has to be one of the best lines in the whole movie and it hasn't even come out yet.
He's not lying when he says he's the greatest botanist on the planet.
The Earth-bound members of Team Watney
Another reason this movie is going to be awesome is that is has Donald Glover and Kristen Wiig in it! Glover will be playing the awkward, antisocial astrodynamicist, Rich Purnell, obsessed with saving Watney and Wiig plays the NASA PR specialist, Annie Montrose, who is forced to garner public support for Watney's rescue mission. Pretty new and interesting roles for both actors.
Plus, Sean Bean!
Do we think he'll die in this movie? I mean, given his track record...
"If anything goes wrong, we die."
It looks like that's a risk Kate Mara is willing to take.
Things will heat up
Okay, this trailer is fire. That's what the cool kids are saying these days, right?
And the world is watching
What do we think that countdown clock is all about?
Will Watney make it home?
I guess we'll just have to wait and see. Unless you've read the books, in which case shhhh! Don't spoil it.
I know that October is usually the month where horror movies thrive, but no amount of ghosts or ghouls is scarier to me than the isolation Matt Damon's character is forced to face in this film. The next month and a half seriously can't go by fast enough!
Ridley Scott's The Martian lands on Earth starting October 2.
