Zac Efron has come a long way since he first shot to fame with the High School Musical franchise. His latest film, We Are Your Friends is due out next Friday, August 28th, 2015, and Efron stars as 23-year old Cole Carter, a young man who struggles to become a prominent music producer in the EDM (electronic dance music) nightlife scene. Here are 10 interesting facts about the actor:

1. Encouragement

At the age of 11, Efron’s dad encouraged him to start acting. This led Efron to do high school plays and later take singing lessons.

2. TV Roles

Efron’s first TV roles were guest parts on Firefly, ER, and The Guardian. After he guest starred in several episodes of Summerland (one of my favorite shows), he became a cast regular where he played Cameron Bale.

3. Record Deal

Speaking of singing, Efron turned down a record deal from Simon Cowell because he wanted to focus on acting, his main priority.

4. Favorite Bands

When it comes to musical taste, some of the actor’s favorite musicians include The Postal Service, The Shins, The Gorillaz, and John Mayer.

5. Voice Acting

During the 2009 season of Seth Green’s hit show on the Cartoon Network Robot Chicken, Zac had several voice acting roles on the series. In the episode above, Darth Matt, he voices the burned Darth Vader.

6. Favorite Movie

Zac’s favorite movie is The Goonies.

7. Cruise Connection

It was Tom Cruise who taught Efron how to ride a motorcycle after the two actors bumped into each other at a party.

8. Working under the hood

When he’s not acting, one of the things he enjoys doing is fixing up cars. He’s repaired two vehicles that were handed down to him from his grandad, a Delorean and a ‘65 Mustang convertible.

9. Favorite sports

If he’s not fixing cars, Efron might be playing one of his favorite sports: golfing, rock climbing, skiing, snowboarding, or surfing.

10. DJ Training

In preparation for his role in We Are Your Friends, Efron was taught the art of djing and mixing by Swedish DJ and electronic dance music producer Alesso, who also appears as himself in the film.
