Josh Powers is one of the 501st Legion's "Infamous Level" Boba Fetts. What does that mean? It means his costume is so detailed—so frelling accurate— he looks like he stepped with purpose off the big screen, hell bent on bringing you in alive, for the bounty he was promised. This dude is all about the details. He also happens to be one of the coolest, most down-to-earth, friendly fellow geeks we've ever met.
Hi, I'm Jen. I'm one of the founding co-hosts of the Anomaly Podcast. A show dedicated to the topics geeks love to gab about. In this episode of our show, my friend and I had the opportunity to speak to Josh Powers (a paramedic), about the 501st Legion. We discussed its mission, how to get in and the galactic romance between he and fellow 501st member—Niki Powers. By the way, Josh is a "Garrison Membership Liaison". That there's fancy talk for "the dude that helps you get into the 501st Legion". Obviously, he's the right guy to speak to about becoming a member of "Vader's Fist".
If you're new to Star Wars fandom, and haven't a clue what the 501st is, let me fill you in before I touch on the interview and present you with a link to the episode.
The 501st Legion is an all-volunteer organization, filled with costume-making badasses. Their main objective is to keep Star Wars alive and kicking through the creation, and wearing, of high quality costume replicas—detailed creations that they construct with their bare hands. The 501st's mission is to serve local communities through volunteer work, help out at charity events and promote Star Wars at Star Wars related events, by wearing their epically awesome costumes and looking super-awesome doing it.
Uh, where do I sign up?
In our interview, Josh not only tells us what they're all about, how to join and what to expect, he also shares the coolest love story in all the galaxies, both near and far, far away. Enjoy a listen as he spins the untold romance of Boba Fett and Boushh the Bounty Hunter/Princess Leia (AKA his wife, Niki).
We talked about "armor parties", which are like quilting circles, only they involve power tools and…oh yeah...armor. We discussed the club's requirements for members, visiting children's hospitals, the reactions little kids AND adults have to the 501st, and how to smuggle a jet pack onto a jet plane (among many other things).
Do yourself a favor and head over to the show notes to not only to stream the audio episode straight from our site, but to see a more photos of Josh and his wife in costume, video footage of his surprise marriage proposal during a convention in full Boba armor, and photos of their awesome Star Wars themed wedding. The links to the sites that Josh references in the interview, are also in our show notes. You're going to need those to research your own armor build! ;)
