Merle Dixon was a tough and brutal character. When he was killed off The Walking Dead series, the last thing I expected to be writing about was that he could be returning. First of all, he got two of his fingers horrifically bitten off, then he got shot in the chest by the Governor. And then after joining the undead, his brother finds him feasting on Ben and kills him all over again, stabbing him in the face. Grim.
So, what if I were to tell you that Michael Rooker, who played Merle, has been spotted on set? What could this mean, and can the dead rise twice?
The actor was spotted on set in Senoia, Georgia (although the show is set in Alexandria, Virginia, The Walking Dead is still filmed in Georgia).
The speculation of Merle's return all began with this post
Why would Michael Rooker be on set for a show where his character is dead?
Unless Merle Dixon has superpowers I really can't see this character rising once more! I have two theories here...
1. Michael came on set for a 'flashback' scene
Characters are always reminiscing about moments shared with other characters. Could this be the reason why Michael was on set again? Interestingly, earlier this year at Comic-Con the Executive Producer of the show, Scott Gimple, revealed that:
"There will be a whole lot of flashbacks in the first half of this season. And in fact, I’m working on an episode right now that’s entirely a flashback."
For those eagle eyed fans, you may have spotted Tyler William James's name a.k.a. Noah in the post. A flashback seems like the most logical way to bring the actors back together. Could the flashback go back to the story of Merle and his brother before all the mayhem began? Could we see other dead characters be brought back to life in a flashback for one final episode together?
2. Another long-time cast member is being killed off
With main characters like Glenn Rhee and Daryl Dixon still alive, could we be seeing some other fan favorites being killed off?
Maybe Michael returned for a "death dinner" with his former co-stars, and just came to say goodbye to the next cast member to be killed off.
The walkers and other threats are still stalking around the Alexandria Safe Zone, and I am sure it won't be long until the next main character makes a shocking exit from the show.
The answers will come on October 11th when The Walking Dead returns on AMC!
